I was in desperate need of some security programs and education on security in general.
I don't remember what search engine I used, but I found the main Wilders security page which was a big "find" for me.
I saw the link to this forum and I lurked here for awhile before registering.
This was one of the first forums that I registered at.

Sometimes I'm really surprised that some computer users have never heard of these forums. It's like one of the basic lines of defense information in the PC security saga. But, then again, I remember when I didn't even know how to start a PC.........sort of thought it took some real intense knowledge just to do that. Now look at me...........I can start my PC and even shut it down without too many major problems :P

I use to look forward to the knowledge Paul shared over at the old Ad-Aware forums, in the VOP days. When he left there I was very disappointed, so when I became aware he had his own board geared up and in full swing, I followed right along. Obviously, a good decision.

I had links to Wilders from my site before the forum was set up so it was a natural place to come for me.

Don't put yourself down about being "inept". Nobody starts out automatically knowing about internet security. Like everything else, it's a learning experience. Just coming here shows your willingness to learn which is a quality to be commended, as there are so many people these days, who could care less about wanting or trying to learn anything. Personally, I stumbled upon this forum by accident. And aside from getting married, joining the Wilders team has been the best move I've ever made!!! ;D ;D ;D

I couldn't remember how I arrived here to save my life, I remember it was something to do with some lost files and File Checker ( Files etc., to me at that time, being a complete div, might just as well have been made out of puffs of smoke as far as my understanding of them went) anyway, up came Pieter and cleared up the sitch in no time and that meant Wilders where stuck with me forever.
I love the banter and the knowledge that gets thrown about like confetti and I love mt AVATAR you all made for me.
I'm like Pretender now, I can Boot up and shut down all by myself it's just the damn bit in between that makes my headache. LOL.

hmmm what made me come to these forums...
the other day i was searching for a anti trojan when i read good reviews about TDS and downloaded it... i liked it very much. as a normal computer should be today in the web world i was also plagued by some exploits and i saw the Diamond forum and came to wilders, and thats how my lovestory started... i can say a person if he asks me why i love wilders that love dont need reasons .. thats another matter that if i go on saying why i love wilders it world be hard to stop...
seriously saying... wilders... you have made me and i bet all those who have joined as members or guests... WE ARE NOT ALONE... you all guys at wilders are doing a great job.. today security is a real problem ... specially in the web... where you dont know what will happen next second.. oops second is too long though... >:(
the response, the way to handle and proceed to solution for a problem... its simply too good...
i hav joined wilders only few days back mayhbe 4 days or 5... since then i hav stayed almost round the clock in here... i just love to be here.. whether i have problems or i have not... wilders is the place where i feel i am me... thanks wilders not for giving me/us what you are giving but making us feel that we are also part of you :)
i am sure my words reflected all those present in wilders... we are with you wilders...

I too remember seeing Paul post in the GRC newsgroups and other places. I used the Wilders web site myself and have often directed others to it for handy reference. I recall the previous Wilders forum, but this one has really taken off and grown.
The real value of forums such as these is to provide a place for people who aren't knowledgeable about various security related matters to read others' threads, post their own questions and get assistance without fear of being stomped on because one is a newbie. :)

I had questions about a certain program I was using because I had read something in another forum. My brother who works for Homeland Security told me to come here and trust the answers, said the moderators, etc. in this forum knew their stuff, could be trusted to tell it straight. So I did, and he was right. What he didn't tell me was how this forum was so friendly& informative with such a wide range of topics. I truly enjoy being part of such a wonderful group and hope as my experience grows I will be able to help someone else one day as you have helped me. Thank you. :-*

The reason you people got stuck with me popping in and out..?
Thats easy, I got bugged as I saw it and when norton said it couldn't handle it I had to look else where.
A link a PC mech. got me here.
And I'm sure I've shown "My ineptness" at keeping finger off of the buttons, (I'm sure they control the blinking lights somehow),
And this "TEAM" has been great at putting up with my short fuse.
I never actually took a shot at anybody here other than Paul the first time I tried to get back into here and didn't remember the space between my name and the "Bond/rap" numbers I put behind it for some unknown\rememberable reason. I shot a Email to Paul (very unkind) about a new time record for being "banned", (never actually been,{o yea on a foos table once}, banned before), but I'd never been to a forum either.
Paul Emailed me back explaining the "get your name and password right" to me in the nicest way. So I knew I had found something "special"! :'(
Thanks again.

I downloaded Spyware Blaster months ago at the suggestion I found on Spybot Search and Destroy. They are both great!!! :D
Tonight I was talking with someone while playing a game on the internet and the subject of spyware came up and I told him about these 2 programs and he said he wanted to know more.
Came to this site and couldn't find a Banner to put on my website and found this forum to ask about it. I want to put a banner on my website so I can get word out to as many people as I can.
Is there a banner available or should I type the link?
BTW. I noticed in the agreement that "backdoors" are spoken of in a negative way. :o I've been using backdoors to yahoo pinochle. Oh no. :o There are so many ways that my computer can get attacked. >:( I can't keep up with it. I hope Spyware Blaster is. ???
BTW 2--I like this forum. It is much easier than the ones at microsoft..less confusing...for me anyway. I have a lot to learn and now I have a place to come to. Thanks :)

Hi all from a "newbie",
I'd been having problems with things that were slipping past AdAware (I've got the freeware version, no resident protection, just on-demand disk scans). A friend at the avast forums, where I'm relatively new but also relatively active, recommended I add SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard to my tools, which I did yesterday. And while here, signed up for the forums (fora?) too.
Probably won't be too active here -- I obviously haven't acquired much experience with either program yet. But the SpywareBlaster looks like it doesn't require a bit of attention, other than periodically checking for updates.
Best to all,
Mike

I don't remember how I originally got here either but I must say that not only have I never left. I do not always post ( I know so little) but I am listening when I can.
I have reccomended Wilders to so many dozens people I have lost count! Seriously, I travel a lot and on airplanes I have often sat next to people whom are involved in IT or small business and we end up small talking. If anything computer related comes up with anyone I mention Wilders as a source and have even written it down for them. I have also had my share of issues requiring tech support. Unfortunatley, many of these folks seem to know very little beyond the Top names in security etc. I have turned so many of them on to the site while we are on the phone and they go right then! Always with great feedback!
I am no whiz by any stretch but it gives me great satisfaction to turn people on to something that I beleive in and know they could benifit from.
I have read almost everything here ( not that understand it all or even remember it all) and the feeling of community and healthy debate, suggestions etc. is to be respected. Many of you have helped me even when my questions are so stupid. There is some one there to be patient and interested in helping.
Most importantly, I feel that I can trust the info and suggestions. If someone is off the mark there is always someone watching out. That makes me feel better than anything. Paul and all the Moderators are fabulous! :-*
THANKS is such a small word for so much meaning!

What made me come to these forums? Well......I'm a semi-newb when it comes to security although I've always tried to be prudent in my computing. When I finally went broadband a few years ago I installed a FW (updated my pre-installed NAV to NIS) and then started poking around at grc.com and learned a lot. Pretty soon I was lurking at DSLR. Then at GSF. Learned more from those boards. There were so many references to "Wilders" on the DSLR and GSF boards that a few weeks ago I finally clicked over to here. Been lurking a few weeks and I gotta tell you that the Wilders forums have quite an aura!
What do I mean by that? Simply that this site seems to be one of the most friendly, comfortable and accommodating sites I've ever seen! :)
Granted, I haven't explored everything here but from what I've seen this place already feels like "home". It seems like a comfortable, friendly, and relaxed place to hang out and a great place to further my learning. I think that comes from Paul Wilders' gracious manner and courteous replies to any and all posts, from the highly technical to the most basic. That attitude seems to be reflected in the posts of all other visitors: mods, senior members, newbies or whatever!
This is my first post here but be assured I will be a most regular visitor. Thanks for such a great site! Big props!

Hi Pretender!
I started learning computers on my own since computers are not too well regarded in my circle for many reasons. :( I went a couple of times to "PC Astuces" before coming here. I heard on that forum that Wilders was one of the best so I decided to pay a visit, and read many threads, and I liked what I read. :)
As a newby I was very impressed by the peoples' knowledge here at Wilders. This is a Grand forum!

my computer was in ruins and obviously i had no idea what to do.
My first step to recovery was discovering that I had a problem in the first place. My first problem was that Lop.com had taken over my computer. I had went to a site (spywareinfo.com?) and it told me to dl ad-aware or spybot.
After that, the path came unwaveringly to these forums, as I daily discovered a greater amount of problems on my ill used computer.
I discovered these forums by pure luck, unless it was fate that brought me to the miracle workers of these forums. I actually first came here because i wanted to use the update pages to see what updates came out for ad-aware updater and norton, seeing as how at the time the live update for those programs wasn't working.
But with a lot of help from these great forums i solved those problems and now i frequent this site daily.

I disconnected my router at the suggestion of a Verizon DSL tech rep to see if it was slowing down my connection. I surfed the web without it for a while and only remembered to hook it back up the next day.
I got a virus that infected thousands of my files. I had to format my OS partition (Win98), and now I don't know how to hook the router back up. Until I figure it out, I am running a software firewall and am looking into getting more protection against spyware and such things.

Hi all,
This might fit better in some other forum, or even an exisiting topic somewhere, but I'll start here because it's a neat description of what we're trying to do.
I found this this morning at another group, in the context of flaming and personal disputes, but doesn't it describe us nicely (and colorfully)?
We're trying to avoid, and help each other (and others) avoid, becoming "road-kill on the Internet Highway".

I came to these forums because I chat In yahoo a lot,and seeing so many there infected with bad stuff,I decided to do some searching,as I see lots there claim that they are security "experts",which usually all they are doing is posting bad sites, virus and spyware loaded sites. And I wanted to be better informed to whats good an what's bad.One of my favorite rooms there is Hackers Lounge #1.Some there atcually do try to help others, some just Claim to be "Security Experts"So here I am ,learning what I want to know ,for myself,Insteading of depending on so called "Yahoo security" Experts.I have to say tho, yahoo is definately a "Learning" experiance!!

Everyone is genuinely concerned about security and spyware issues; too often I am considered OTT with my security concerns and the layered protection I have and seeking to add to my computer. I spend time here reading and learning about all the security tools available especially those by DiamondCS which brought me to the forum in the first place.
Definitely a forum for friendly guidance when needed :) and a great knowlodge base from other members questions and answers ;)

::) As a brand new computer user, my eyes looked like the smiley here, when trying to learn to use the pc and to use the software. I was angry to find so much parasitism among the net. My anger was channeled into learning about pc security. Sometimes I felt like giving up because the nasties seemed overwhelming. Tds-3 was one of the first programs that I found that made me want to keep on computing. It was like having a big brother show up on the schoolground unexpectedly right before a fight. Only problem was that for a beginner, using Tds-3 to its potential, requires some reading. Trying to learn more about DCS software led me to this forum initially and with time it is more than that. It has been a place to get answers, to share problems (re:fellas I think I have a trojan), and to have a sense of a community of "like minded people" who care about computer security. I cannot mention all of you by name, but here is a !THANKS FOR WHAT YOU DO! to all the moderators, engineers, Paul, the DCS Team, and all you who took time to help me with my problems. To any other "newbies" reading this: you have shown good judgement in coming here and you are among friends. The best substitute for wisdom is the ability to discern it in others. This forum is here to stay. hu! :)

I found this board with a little good luck and fortune ;) ... My first experience with added security features began several years ago with Spybot & Ad-Aware which at the time I discovered through the PC World magazine ... never had a problem but I was fascinated with everthing that was going on with malware, adware, spyware etc. And cruised their boards with a desire to learn more. Anyway someone mentioned in a post that wilders.org - http://www.wilders.org/index.htm was an excellent resource for security apps, and from there I checked out the forums. I lurked around as a guest for a couple of years :o , I need time to develop a trust ... and when I had a slight false/positive problem while trialing Pest Patrol and had developed that trust ... I decided to join The Family ... a link to that post if anyone wants to see it. http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=27352
All the years trolling these boards have been a great education and led me to so many wonderful programs ... like freeware from Javacool and ... purchasing and joining the DCS Family.
With all that said; Thanks for Welcoming me to the Family and I'm glad I've found my Home. ;)

I suppose I have a nasty little punk to thank.( The punk being the little twirp who created the vile thing that follows. ) After we caught the JSExploit virus, I didn't want anything to do w/a PC. I was terrified to click on anything. So I didn't get on any more. About a year later, my husband found SWI, & tried to tell me programs that would make me feel safer. But I'm stubborn as a mule. It took another 6 mo. before I got on the PC, & after going thru several sites, I found Wilders. I've found a good resting place! ;D It's an excellant forum, superbly divided up into some great programs. I enjoy reading thru it all, & have learned how to use some weapons of my own. The members here enjoy helping as much as I enjoy asking. Wilders has shown that the PC world can be "wild" in a good way, & they've all become my neighbors. Thanks for having this safe- house! 8)

I just bought myself a new Dell Inspiron, and wanted to start off by loading it up with the "right" security programs. After getting nailed by two different worms and losing the contents of one hard-drive, I don't want to take any chances on today's 'net. So I did a google search for security forums, and POOF!, I was here! I've spent the last couple of days scanning through a number of threads, and this certainly seems like a pleasant cave, inhabited by friendly denizons. Guess you guys are stuck with me.

I came here to get advice how to fix or report bugs in programs I'd bought. Happily they are fixed and there are many people here whose advice I really value as they have not only made me aware of how to secure my PC but also have helped me spend my money wisely in buying only the best applications. So I have all DCS programs as well as some others I found out about here.
This forum should get royalties for the amount of security software it promotes. I also think that there should be a recommended list of programs and purchasing links via this website so that they do get commission for introducing visitors to software i.e. NOD 32, Kaspersky, OutPost Pro etc
Shareware sites like MajorGeeks have links to software and they profit from advertising them. Here products do get a hell of a lot of exposure and I don't know if they get commission but they should - it's only fair.
