thanks for the news

here's the release info. from their site

System Safety Monitor Free Edition was released, build 2.0.8.574

System Safety Limited is pleased to announce the first release of System Safety Monitor 2 Free Edition.
SSM 2 freeware is based on the SSM 2.0.8 code base.

The main advantages of the regular (shareware) version (2.1+) by now:
the new real-time Registry Monitor fully integrated with the process monitor with the learning mode support. Many built-in objects and default rules to facilitate configuration;
the new improved design of the "Application Activity" dialog box;
multiple other GUI improvements;
low level disk access handling (killdisk trojan);
the new services module;
multiple performance optimizations;
high priority support;
high priority development.

IMPORTANT NOTE for Windows 9x users: Windows 9x is not supported in 2.1+. The functionality of 2.1 would be too hard to implement for Windows 9x and we can not afford that given the Windows 9x market perspectives.
However SSM 2 freeware will continue to support Windows 9x as much as possible.
Download the latest free edition build now." }-

-{ Quote: "does teh free version lack any features?" }-It appears to be the Full 2.0.8.574 version, with all features for that version. There have been updates since this, which show/listed in the post#3 by "betauser2"

Hope your right..........i wrote them much earlier about the fact that my key did not work with the latest build and have heard nothing as of yet. Yes, i have a key that should work with that version.

"Please follow these steps while upgrading System Safety Monitor
with the 2.0.8 (or higher) version:

- on the registration screen check the "Enter registration key" option
and paste your new registration (license) key (see below);
- run System Safety Monitor and check the registration data in the
"Information" tab.

Your new registration (license) key:"

Their registration key is much longer than a single line (indeed, it is the longest I have come across at about 1,400 characters - not something you want to type in manually so thank goodness they allow cut'n'paste!). SSM is well worth checking out - and SSM version 2.1 onwards will not work for Win98/ME users, so they have no need to consider the full version.

I would agree with the comments on support and SysSafety have acted quickly to incorporate many user requests (I know of no other "system firewall" covering low-level disk access or Windows shutdown permissions). It is however, like other software of this type, most effective for experienced users (at least, people who know what legitimate software they have installed on their system).

Nice that they decided to make a freeware version, I hope it will be able to work together with my other HIPS, but of course the payware version looks much nicer, the new registry monitor seems to be real powerful. ;D

This was not my experience. Maybe the support gods are angry with me. Sent support an email about 5 days ago on how to configure SSM with Punkbuster and BF2. SSM and Punkbuster hard locks the system. Never received a response so I uninstalled the trial. To bad really because it did appear to be pretty slick compared to its competitors.

We apologize for the delay - your email have been filtered out by our spam filter by mistake:-[ . The support will respond right now.
You should have post your bug report to our forum as well.
Thanks

-{ Quote: "support is second to none!!!even for freeware .. " }-I agree with this 100%.
An example was when I found a conflict with SSM and Icesword (on AMD64 systems), they worked on this untill resolved (bug/problem solved well within 24 hrs of report)

Want to provide an update to my Post #15.

I have been in contact with the developer via email and have to agree with Stem, Infinity and egghead that support is excellent and the developer is attentive to issues brought to his attention.

Noticed the free edition when I went to SSM website then immediately check at Wilders what others in the community might have to say about it and found this thread.
I've always wanted to intall SSM but turned off by the fact that it was shareware. Now that it's got freeware, i'll try it at once and see how it pairs up with Cyberhawk.
This is really great news.

System Safety Monitor Free Edition 2.0.8.576 was released

What's new
* now all executable files (PE) are signed with the System Safety Limited software publisher certificate.
NOTE: win9x users may not be able to verify the digital signature due to the absence of the appropriate cryptographic provider.

Bugs fixed:
* sometimes SSM did not catch physical memory access attempts.

Hi,folks: It is so nice to learn that SSM has finally had a free version available. It is an excellent app, and because it is a freeware, I have an urgent temptation to use it. At present time, I have these apps in PC: outpost firewall pro, KAV v.6, Ewido plus, winpatrol plus,BlackIce and few AS. Outpost has an outstanding application/component control; KAV has a proactive defense;blackice has instrusion detection. Therefore, my question is this: Do I still need SSM, even it is an irresistable freeware?
