Assuming the default settings are full of holes....
What is the best practice to secure a d-link and linksys router?

For the most part, they are fairly secure out of the box.
One setting to check, if available, would be Remote Management and make sure it is set to disable unless you really need it.
With most, you can safely disable any other pass through settings for things you will not be using (IPSec, PPTP, etc.).
These types of routers will block unsolicited connection attempts unless you forward something through to a LAN system.
Depending on what steps you may want to take to limiting LAN systems and features available in the router, there may be some inside out protection steps you could take.
