Hello everyone. I'm experiencing a very strange behaviour with the codecs on my system.

They were all working fine about a couple of weeks ago. But now they seem to not be working at all.

All I see when I watch any movie, is like a tiled image of the video playing... but it's not recognisable even moreso by the hazy green that it appears in - I can see the video is actually rolling... but it's just not recognisable. It's really bugging me because I want to watch some movies.

I've tried uninstalling all of my codecs and reinstalling them.. but to no avail.

PLEASE help, I have a friend coming over soon and I don't want to dissapoint them by not solving this problem.

Is there a codec cleaner out there anywhere? My sound seems to be absolutely fine.

Are codec packs a bad idea? Sometimes I watch movies and I don't have the codecs... how do I find out which ones they are encoded with?

Sincerely,

Clement Yeung aka MishimaSan

It might be of use to let us know which Player you are referring to.
I know I have issues with WMP11 not rendering DivX correctly, even though codecs are installed. The other players I have work fine.
In the KLite Codec pack, there is GSpot 2.52 which can tell you needed and installed audio/video codecs.
Just open the file with GSpot, and it lets you know if codecs needed are there, if not, which one's you need.
Here's the stand alone version of GSpot 2.52:

And there's Sherlock, which checks for broken codecs:

codec packs are not a bad idea, u just have to moderate how many codecs/filters u install. btw u can check out CCCP (see my sig) if u need some good codecs/filters.

You can also try VLC player if you're having problems with codecs. It's a bit slow on my system, which is why I use MPC with CCCP as WSFuser recommends.

Thanks a lot guys for the help. I've fixed my codecs so far. But the only ones that aren't working are apparently .ASF formats.

GSpot tells me that it can't identify the file format and thinks that it's associated with WM9 as a .ASF.

I can't see things like buffered video code on www.myspace.com from the music videos.

What do you suggest?
