I still like winamp best for audio, Media Player Classic with Quicktime and Real alternative for video.

Video > Media player Classic + K-Lite Codec Pack
Audio > xmplay (no install necesary)

K-Lite Mega Codec Pack (http://www.codecguide.com/features_mega.htm) contains BSPlayer, MPC and codecs for almost everything.
AVS DVD Player (http://www.avsmedia.com/DVDPlayer/index.aspx) is most likely the best freeware DVD player, but with high CPU usage.
VideoLAN (http://www.videolan.org/) plays almost everything (except realtime) without need to have any codecs.
