..............I apologize for not repeating the list entirely :)
What is the use of a message title, if all messages have the same title (here "Re: Wish-list thread")? For instance, how do you see at a glance which one of these "Re: Wish-list thread" posts in that list requested "Always backup MBR and partition table regardless of whether the entire disk or selected partitions are imaged", "Ability to restore MBR or partition table above without having to restore a partition"? Hint: williamgjames on Thu 11 Nov 2004 02:47 GMT (http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=85595&page=2#post297195). Wouldn't it be clearer if that post had been titled (and linked) "Always backup MBR and partition table (http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=85595&page=2#post297195)"?
To prevent users from that very counter-productive habit, in a way that would the less possible hurt their habits, I suggest that the « Title: » box were presented empty to the user preparing to post a reply. If he forgets to include a title, thus submits his post with that « Title: » box still empty, the software would gently return him his message, politely asking « Please build a short title precisely reflecting the contents of your message ». No other warning, no other wording; saying the right words at the right moment in the right place, saves volume as well as misunderstanding risks.
