Hi. I am new to network administration and have been assigned the task of fixing our backup procedures and need a little help honing the backup strategy that is in place. We are a SBS 2003 environment with XP clients.

Our current backup strategy consists of this:

Week 1 Full Backup runs once every two weeks on Fridays
Week 1 Incremental Backup runs over Week 1 Full and runs on M/T/W/Th every two weeks

Then there is an identical configuration but it is titled Week 2 instead and runs on the alternative weeks; I am told this way we will have two full weeks of backup.

My problem is this: My Week 1 & 2 backups will overwrite so there is only ever one file in the folder that stores them (folders are called Week1Full & Week2 Full). When I configure the incremental backups and am asked what file to append I choose the Full back up for the corresponding week. What ends up happening is that the first file in the incremental folder is actually a full backup then the additional files are incrementals; then, the files just keep increasing and appending the name with a number (ie, the first one is call Week1Inc1, Week1Inc2, Week1Inc3, etc). The files never overwrite and the disk gets full so I have to manually delete backups.

I guess what I need to know is what am I doing wrong? How do I go about configuring a backup strategy that will run one full back up once a week and incremental backups the other days.

I hope this isn't confusing, I'm a little confused just reading it. Please let me know if you need additional clarification.

thx!

"the first file in the incremental folder"
Are you saying that the FULL and INCs of the same set do not reside in the same folder?

Yes, I'm not sure why but this is how it was setup when I first started working here.

I think they have to be in the same folder. If you schedule an INC and it can't find a FULL with the name you provided, it will create a FULL instead. I don't think it will look anywhere except in the folder you told the INC to reside.

I agree with you; it makes sense to me, too. If I do have them in the same folder, how do I configure it so that the incremental files get overwritten. I feel like a dork asking these basic questions but I got confused with how the current strategy was setup and really would just like to start over.

Hello rfips,

Thank you for choosing Acronis Disk Backup Software (http://www.acronis.com/enterprise/).

Please note that TheWeaz is right, if you scheduled a task to create incremental backup and there is no full backup in the folder then the full back up will be created. As for the rest, your backup stratagy is correct and you will be able to perform it with help of Acronis True Image. Please make sure that you scheduled to store full and incremental backups to the same folders.

Thank you.
