AV Scanner on Floppy?

Are there any AV/malware scanners (with current signatures) that can run off of a bootable floppy?

Not from a bootable floppy, but from a bootable USB you can run portable ClamWin (~15 MB with definitions)

Does that mean that one can download ClamWin, put it on a USB thumbdrive, and run it from there? It does not have to be placed on the computer being scanned? Is it a special version of ClamWin?

Cerxes, thanks for the link. Great little AV program. Just installed it on my two thumb drives.


Jerry, that is exactly right. Follow the link, download it to your desktop then when asked where to install it use the drop down menu to point it to your USB drive. After I did the install it asks to have it`s defs. updated. Then asks what and if you would like to run the scan. It showed my 2 hard drives, 2 optical drives and my USB attached 250 MB zip drive. Very nice.

Antivir can be installed to a flashdrive which makes it portable and f-prot for dos is portable.

drweb's cureit is a good portable av.

mcafee might be another one. The gui part could be ripped from Bart's PE. And the engine and DAT part come from nai's websites.

btw, the ewido and ad-aware are portable too.

ps: I just notice that if i try to download mcafee's regular DAT(4753 for example), I have to accept an user agreement before reaching the download page. However, on the other hand, when i try to get the beta DAT (4100 version) with the engine, there is no such an agreement showing up. Therefore I guess it is legal for me, as a non-nai customer, to use its beta DAT with engine. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Do I follow the same procedure for AntiVir? I have it downloaded to my desktop. Now do I install it on the thumbdrive, and update and run it from there? I assume that AntiVir is the standard Personal Edition. I did not see a portable model.

I would like to have both on the thumbdrive for future use as needed.

I have used this method recently on a badly infected PC and Bart PE with Mcaffee did the biz...

I downloaded the sdat file from here ftp://ftp.nai.com/CommonUpdater/.

Also the Good Dr. can be updated using WinRar and manually downloading the daily updates and occasional definition add-in.

VBA32 also has a CMline scanner and a "rough" gui demo scanner .

What is WinRar, and how do I get it or use it to update? I am thinking that it will be on a thumbdrive, and not accessed very often. When I access it can I update it then from the program or do I need another application, WinRar?

You can download WinRar then open DrWeb.exe because it is a WinRar executable and then add the daily updates. Sometimes it is easier to just download the whole thing, but I don't like the newer version so I just keep the older version.

It is a file compression\de-compression utility similar to WinZip among others.

I downloaded it. Now do I put it on the thumbdrive and download the updates there also?

You put WinRar on the c: and drweb on the thumb and then open it with Winrar and drag the decompressed, from the zip files to the Drweb archive. HTH
