View Full Version : How are views counted?

In this forum, each thread has a count of the views.

How is the count determined?

For registered members, the count can eliminate duplicate views by the same member. Does the count do so?

What about for non-registered viewers?

The counter I use at my web site was locally written.
It bases counts on the IP address, so if there are N consecutive accesses to a page from the same IP address, call this IP-1, the counter gets bumped by only 1.

If some other IP address accesses, the page, the counter then gets bumped by one and if IP-1 again accesses the page, the counter is again bumped by 1.

So, if somebody views any of my pages umpteen times whilst connected to the same IP address, and there are no other IP addresses accessing the pages, the counts only get bumped by 1.

It looks like each individual view is counted whether from the same IP or not.

That's probably correct, bj - if I go back to read my own posting (or to check for replies), or to edit the posting, the count does get bumped by one, even if I've never left the site.

Normal vBulletin functionality is that any view is counted in the view count, even your own, repeated views. There is no special functionality to distinquish between different member or guests viewing a thread, whether by member ID of IP address. All views from anyone at any time are counted.

Then the statistic is not useful.

So ??

{QUOTE-> Then the statistic is not useful. <-QUOTE}Hey, what can I tell you? I didn't write the forum software. The column is called "views" not "unique individuals that clicked on this thing".

Useful or not, almost all forum packages are written the same way. vBulletin, IPB, and phpBB all count views this way.

I purchased Peggy Lawton's chocolate chip cookies at Costco yesterday.
Not my favorite type, but I was in a hurry.
