After I do a manual update of Ewido, I get the following message in the status line at the bottom of the window:

ewidoctri.exe not running but required!

The update runs OK and I can do a manual scan OK. What does this message mean?

That is usually an indication that ewido security suite control service is not started. That services main purpose is to start/stop ewido's guard....but also plays a part in autoupdates.
