I am getting the error, Could not start the IPSEC Services service
on Local Computer.

Error 10045: The attempted operation is not supported for the type of object referenced.

I am running McAfee Internet Security Suite, and their recommendation is to turn off the Windows firewall. Is this why I'm getting this error?

If not, should I be concerned? I've searched on the error, which seems to have something to do with networking software, but I am not on a network.

McAfee ISS already includes a firewall so u should turn off the Windows one. also check ur services and disable IPSEC.

according to TweakHound (http://www.tweakhound.com/xp/security/page_3.htm), it may only be required for some VPN connections.

then this site (http://www.beemerworld.com/tips/servicesxp.htm) says it may only be needed for some domains.

TechRepublic (http://techrepublic.com.com/5138-10877-5747817.html) has a PDF "Windows XP services that can be disabled" and and they too recommend u disable IPSEC unless you connect over an IPSEC secured connection.

Blackviper also recommends disabling it and says it may only be needed on some domains or VPN connections.

Thanks, WSFuser & Rico, for your prompt replies. The consensus seems to be that it either can or should be disabled. My computer seems to be working fine, so I guess I'll leave things as they are. :)
