View Full Version : Not happy with Nod32 - refund?

??? Not happy at all after purchasing Nod32 mid February, running full scans every day, continually finding threats, only to have more threats found the next day. It got to a point where my computer was unusable, continual pop-ups, and then closing browsers and finally a computer that rebooted itself without warning, while when the computer was running it was scanning for viruses and threats. Luckily a friend put me on to Trend Housecall which scanned and found a multitude of threats and removed all of them. After spending countless hours scanning to no avail with Nod32 I'll be seeking a full refund from Eset. Nod32 has been uninstalled.

First off, Nod32 is a virus scanner, the issues you are experiencing are most directly associated with adware, in which case I recommend running CCleaner (http://ccleaner.com/) to clean your temp files. Install Ad-Aware (http://www.lavasoft.de/software/adaware/) and Ewido Anti-Trojan trial (http://www.ewido.net/en/download/). Run scans from safe mode with all three scanners. Make sure your Nod32 is configured to use Blackspear's settings in the stickied thread, you may have some viruses that cannot be deleted and just need to be quarantined.

Not happy at all after purchasing Nod32 mid February, running full scans every day, continually finding threats, only to have more threats found the next day.

So what are you saying that your running full scans everyday and NOD is continously finding threats, well thats great isnt it, it must show that NOD32 is doing its work like what its meant to. Your not expecting NOD to keep quiet like a door mouse or are you ? Isnt the idea of NOD32 to find threats ??

It got to a point where my computer was unusable, continual pop-ups, and then closing browsers and finally a computer that rebooted itself without warning, while when the computer was running it was scanning for viruses and threats.

Well it looks like your PC was a mess before you installed NOD on it, heaven knows what you were using before obviosly not NOD32, BD or KAV or any good AV probably Nortons. And if your having pop ups why the hell didnt your previous so called "security software" detect this and stop it. Dont expect your computer to be in a mess as it sound like it was previously and install NOD, wave the magic wand and all is fixed. Sorry but it doesnt work that way. Remember Rome wasn't built in a day either.

Luckily a friend put me on to Trend Housecall which scanned and found a multitude of threats and removed all of them.

Really oh well perhaps your friend should go and work for Eset and teach them about AV software, detection, heuristics etc etc. I'm sure NOD32 will have alot to learn from him/her. Sorry I am not being rude here or nasty but do your self a favour and stop falling for other peoples reccomendadtions unless you have researched and final proof. No I'm not saying that Trend is bad, but I will say right now its no where near as good as NOD or KAV and thats a fact. Plus how do you know that it was not picking up false positives.

Finally let me give you some final advice here. I can rest assure your PC was a mess before you installed NOD32 no doubt about it, so if I were in your shoes this is what I would do:

1. Format the whole HDD and rid all the garbage in there.
2. Re install your OS from scratch
3. Re install your drivers etc and OS
4. Re install NOD32 and follow Blackspears settings
5. Install a good firewall, yes there are good free ones out there as well.
6. Install Antispyware software such as Spybot, MS AS and Adaware Free

If you come across a suspicious file not picked up by NOD32, you shuld always submit it to samples[at]eset.com for further analysis. If another scanner picks it up it doesn't necessarily mean that it's a real threat. It can be a non-functional file or a false positive, hence further analysis is required.

As for a refund, I reckon there is a 30-day grace period after purchase when you can apply for it. However, you should take into account that NO AV is able to detect 100% of all threats in the world and switching to another AV might result in lower detection capabilities. NOD32 is, per independent tests, one of the best AVs on the market in terms of detection rates and seems to have the best proactive detection (the gap between NOD32 ranking 1st and the 2nd AV in proactive tests is always huge).

Couldn't agree any more well said.

Jill you need to take advice from those here who know far more than you and including me as well.

I use NOD and have never ever regreted it.

Follow Albinoni's great advice.
If you install security software on an already compromised PC then you'll definitely have problems.

Maybe you need to understand the differences between all the various threats and the software you need to combat them.
Plus learning how to browse as safely as possible is a great way of steering clear of problems.

thanks for your advice guys, and yes Im no PC guru either, thats why I expected purchased virus software to protect my computer (and clean existing problem threats), just by hitting "scan and clean" so to speak. I had previously used Nod32 a while back and had no problems, so was bitterly dissappointed when it failed me on this occasion.

Nod32 has been uninstalled and the new software has got my computer clean and continues to bar incoming threats.

Ive been given a refund, thankyou ESET. If one of the mods would like to delete this post I have no problem with that.

Thanks guys.

Jill

I'd suggest that you install NOD32 later and carry out a full system scan. You might be surprised about the result :-)

All I can say is: "good luck".

And I'd also suggest that you install NOD32 sometime in the future and scan. You may be surprised/shocked......

Yes he/she/it wants the links to the proof of his/her cracks etc but I told him/her/it to go ahead and google that stuff up him/her/it/self. I guess I should send the links to Eset really in case you guys hadn't seen them. I mean - none of us really want you spending your time supporting unpaid users.

It appears that our Mr Shanijee is a busy little boy over at almutawa3. Even the way he edits out the h**p of url's is the same... Looking for cracked versions of wingate, antivirus software and games.

Oh, and he's been told off over there for posting url's too :D

We know that already. The AV industry isn't that big that we would not share informations or having personal friendship with other people from different av companies, such as panda for example ;) And yes, i can confirm too that he's using pirated software, which doesn't suprise me at all because he comes from pakistan. ::)
And by the way you should be ashamed to give such a impression about your country - people like you improving such things every day more and more and then they look suprised when it comes down to the point that someone says "Pakistan? no sorry, please prove first that you have a valid license".

Does the fact, that someone comes from Pakistan, means that he or she is using pirated software? I think this is quite a blunt thing to state!! Now let me figure out, you are from the US? A man of your caliber should not state things like this!!

Happy Bytes
March 13th, 2006, 05:48 AM
I didn't state that. I confirmed only that he's using pirated software. This has nothing to do with stating this in general, i'm only telling that i'm not suprised.
Of course you do have this pirated software problems in every parts of the world, but especially in Asia it's a big problem. Woudln't you agree with me on that? That means NOT that i automatically say everyone who comes from there uses pirated software, i'm not in the position to judge this.

No hard feelings, but I still don't think you should write these things.....

That's your good right, but I stand to the fact, that you shouldn't state your surprises attached to a certain country or culture, that's all!

pykko
March 13th, 2006, 07:18 AM
Well.... a cause of the piracy may be the high prices for a license, and let me explain a little.
40$ per year is a piece of cake for well developed countries like USA, Canada, Germany, France, where a sallary is about 2-3000 $.
But take for example Ukraine, Bulgaria, Indonesia, Nigeria and so on... there a sallary is about 2-300$ or even less.
A good solution would be to have the prices regarding the level of development for each country. If ESET would do this it may be the first Software company to proceed in this way and many users will be happy. ;)

Also some special offers like discounts for students in these countries or...free license when acquiring a PC component from a shop, etc. :)
