View Full Version : NAV LiveUpdate definitions 133 viruses behind...

Symantec NAV definitions are not released immediately on LiveUpdate - instead, they are released for manual download on the Symantec website and the LiveUpdate definitions are only updated approx. ONCE A WEEK.

This concerns me as many people who rely on Norton Anti-Virus auto-LiveUpdate are not getting the protection until up to 7 days AFTER the viruses are ABLE to be detected. >:( (And millions of computer users have Norton as their only defense...)

More, and rather scary, information is provided as a direct quote from the Symantec website:
-{ Quote: "
Intelligent Updater:
Virus Definitions created March 5
Virus Definitions released March 5
Norton AntiVirus Corp. Edition Defs Version: 40305a
Norton AntiVirus Corp. Edition Sequence Number: 15201
Total Viruses Detected: 58980

LiveUpdate:
Virus Definitions released February 27
Norton AntiVirus Corp. Edition Defs Version: 40227e
Norton AntiVirus Corp. Edition Sequence Number: 15084
Total Viruses Detected: 58847

Norton AntiVirus for Mac Defs released February 28

" }-

Could anyone explain to me why there is a 133 virus difference between the LiveUpdate definitions and the Intelligent Updater definitions? Doesn't this put many regular computer users at unnecessary risk? Would it REALLY be that much more work to simply put the new definitions on the LiveUpdate server?

I guess there is no use floggin a dead horse, but why do people educated in internet security use this program when better alternatives exist?

NOD32 is faster, wins more VB awards, updates daily without any user intervention, is less of a resource hog and has less compatibility issues.

You don't here very many complains with NOD32.

Hi MrBlaze,

First go to this site:

http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/download.html

There you see the latest date of the virus definitions released for the IntelligentUpdater, and for LiveUpdate.

Click on:
Download Virus Definitions (Intelligent Updater Only)
That will lead you to this page:
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/defs.download.html

Choose your version:
In your case that will be:
Norton AntiVirus for Windows 9x/NT/ME/XP

Choose your language.

Click on:
Download Updates.

You then will be led to the page for your version and language.

(When you use IntelligentUpdater for the first time, it might be a good idea to go to the end of that page where you can download a text file with some help-instructions.)

Now look at the first list of versions of NAV; your version will be amongst them:
NAV 2002 for Win98/Me/NT/2000/XP Home/XP Pro

You have now two choices:
1. you can download a big file in one time (at this moment it is about 3.10 MB)
2. you can download in three different parts.

The choice is yours; what I do is to use possibility 1, but it might depend on the speed of your connection.
OK, lets say that you used possibility 1.
The name of the file begins with the number of the month, then the day, then i32 then exe
You downloaded that big file.
All you have to do now is, after downloading, double click on that file and all the virus-definitions will be installed.

It all might look a bit annoying, but I promise you: when you get used to it, it isn't that difficult.
(but I have to admit: it all might depend on your connection-speed).

I hope this helps.
Please feel free to ask!

thank you fan j that was painless now if nortion would get it together and update live update regulerly because newbys like me go to there web site and easly get confused.

i wish they did it this way if you have a 3month evaluation nortion that usealy comes with newly bought pc's thay have a trial subscription those people should get the late update that where all outraged about.

and those that actualy bought there nortion and 1 year subscription should get the most up to date viruse definitions availiabe with live update that would make more sence.

UNICRON ill buy NOD32 when they out right say they wont allow fbi green lantern trojan i know nav already said yes to those goverment mofos but it to late i bought it the only way ill buy another antiviruse software is if they specificly say that they will stop all infections regardless of its source goverment or not.

I do not use Norton AV as my main Anti-Virus (I definitely know there are better alternatives out there) - but I do have it on some of my systems (as an extra precaution) so I have more experience with the program when I need to troubleshoot someone's problems.

This was reported as an advisory for everyone who uses NAV as their main system (and anyone else who is just curious). I have to agree with you when you state that NOD32 is the better choice - unfortunately, it is not nearly as widely used as NAV. *:-/

You'll find mainly American companies work with the FBI on stuff like Magic Lantern, but companies outside of the USA will not. DiamondCS for instance has no intention of letting ML be ignored by TDS-3. I can't recall if Eset was american or not. I'll email Larry and ask his take on this.

also i notice some of you got software i never heard of now it isnt fair that us newbys who are less fortunite not have the same security.

MrBlaze,

I forgot something:
After you have installed the new def's using Intelligent Updater, you can delete that big file (you know, that one that begins with the number of the month, then of the day etc.).

Cheers, Jan.

Oops, I'm not on my best these evening: forgot also to say:
When you open the NAV-screen, you can see whether the new def's are indeed installed; just look at the date!

MRBLAZE, I emailed Larry McJannet from Eset in San Diego and he told me he had serious doubts the FBI would ever contact Eset at all. He also said if the US government makes it a law that all security software must ignore ML them Eset would have to comply TO AMERICAN PURCHASES ONLY, and that any other country's version would detect it fine. He figured foreign copies would make their way into the US via a quatsi-black-market. He told me that if the FBI releases information to security companies so they can exclude it, sooner or later, a free stand alone "Magic Lantern Killer" is bound to show up everywhere anyhow.

Conclusion: Any law regarding this matter would be about as enforcable as the copyright laws for mp3s or taping a show off television, in other words NOT!

So no worries, ML is not going to be a problem. (unless it is already on our systems....)

Eset has confirmed this quite a while ago. For an overview regarding various views/statements from security software vendors regarding ML, have a look at this archived thread:

Just for anyone's info.

I would be more worried about the 133 viruss that you are not protected from because symantec can't put the definitions on live update. * I'm a NAV user as well and I must say this is extremly disappointing. *First it was their pathetic trojan detection and now this, its time to look for a new AV program. *

Thanks javac for posting this info!

Does NOD32 have incoming and outgoing e-mail scanning like NAV 2002? *

Incoming only. Provided one makes sure his system is clean, that should be sufficient.

JavaC, you talked me into it along with others input also.

I dumped NAV and went with NOD32. * I think in the final tally NOD32 was *less then the update package for NAV I was looking at!! *Dang, can't beat that.

Thanks to everyone that participated for opening my eyes. * For $40.00 why go with the second fiddle, heck I blow that on a couple of Vodka and Ice Teas, aka IcePick, at the local water hole in an hour.
