Question about editing boot.ini!! Yikes! (please help newbie to forum)

First of all, sorry if this is in the wrong forum!

I have just somehow avoided a real Major Disaster with my new computer, phew. Bascially a trial of Acronis Disk Director didnt seem to install well and i was stuck in an endless loop of boot > Acronis straight away (no Safe Mode to be able to fix the problem - System Restore, ERUNT, uninstall programme from Windows etc.) Somehow i came out smiling.

Now still shaken from my experiences i want to add the option to boot to safe mode in my boot menue, so i can always fix my problems from in Windows. I have seen a guide http://xphelpandsupport.mvps.org/how_do_i_put_the_safe_mode_optio.htm
and was a little scared when it talked of editing boot.ini

I was wondering would you trust this guide? Should i back up first? Make a restore point? Make an ERUNT registry backup? Backup boot.ini file (somehow)?

Also have you seen Acronis True Image 9 anywhere for a good price (now shocked into the need to backup)?!

Please try to fix your hard drive's Master Boot Record as it is described in Acronis Help Post (http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=55317). This may resolve the issue with the bootup process.

Actually, this guide is correct and your computer will be booted into Windows Safe mode after you perform the changes in the boot.ini file.

If the issue persists after fixing the MBR then please create Acronis Report in the way described below:

- Download and run Acronis Report Utility (http://www.acronis.com/files/support/AcronisReport.exe);
- Select the "Create Bootable Floppy" option;
- Insert a blank floppy disk in the A: drive and proceed with creation of the bootable floppy;
- Boot the computer from this diskette and wait for report creation process to finish;
- Collect the report file from the floppy.

Attach the collected report.txt file to your request along with the step-by-step description of the actions taken before the problem appears and the link to this thread. We will investigate the problem and try to provide you with the solution.
