you know the one's

particularly in the area's of ad-blocking and privacy, but anything you have become hooked on might be something worth looking at.

I have to admit, I have a pretty bare bones setup, and am pretty happy with it. I just wonder if I couldn't be even happier!

Hi HandsOff,

For me, you need NoScript, AdBlock plus + Filterset G Updater, Refcontrol, Spoofstick and Extended Cookie Manager for privacy and security of your browser

Hi HandsOff, :)

Though I'm STILL looking...I've so far got in Security:

Adblock Plus,
No Script, &
Netcraft toolbar
Cookie Culler

Then absolute "Must Have's for me are also:

Forecastfox (Weatherforecasts from the Weather Channel)

Reminder Fox

Foxclocks (displays times from cities around the world. Good if you have family
and friends living abroad, for example)

Gmail skins with emoticons! ;)

Gmail Notifier

Smiley Xtra ;)

I think that's it so far.
I'm sure though there's still more to come. :P

I frequently used ScrapBook - as I can copy and captures everything in the webpages if I want to. ;)

ImgLikeOpera - if I am only interested to surf not to include pictures or images and speed up my browsing. 8)

SpoofStick - to at least know what really is the real name of the site I am visiting.

FoxClocks - to know the time in different parts of the world...;D

Though I have many extensions...::) :) ...but the above I think is the most important must have for me. Coz other extensions may sometimes are very annoying. :P  Besides, I have some other programs that handles security and privacy in my pc. 8)

I agree - although I don't know why Flashblock is necessary since Noscript can block Flash and other plugins, too.

Mrkvonic

Hello,
Noscript can allow / block flash from running on the page.
With Flashblock you can decide which one you want to view.
Imagine a page with 10 flashes.
You allow them with Noscript, but then you get the play button used by Flashblock. Then you can click each one individually and see them, rather than all of them. Reduces a bit of clutter and adds more control over content. Not crucial, but useful. I have no fear from flash, I just hate seeing them.

Thanks for the Spoofstick link, ronjor. Too bad the Mozilla people, for whatever reason, don't want to recognize it so you have to go "outside" to get it for FF 1.5.x.

Flashblock seems to kick up my firefox memory usage, but you can create a UserContent.css in the Chrome Folder of the Profile Folder and include this code:
/* Block Flash, using a placeholder you can click to unblock a desired Flash animation. */
/* Doesn't work for embed tags, which are less common than object tags - bug 190970 */
object[classid$=":D27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000"],
object[codebase*="swflash.cab"] {
-moz-binding: url("http://www.cs.hmc.edu/~jruderma/flash.xml#obj"); }

And it does the exact same thing

Thanks for the replies everyone. Firefox has done a great job so far for me as far as malware is concerned. Something did try to install itself the other day, but it was blocked. Still I figure I better make sure it is set up right.

The "ShowIP" extension is also very interesting, and like Spoofstick, can be used to detect phishing (direct Whois etc):

i've got loads of must have extensions, but i'll show just 5 of them.

Search Engine Ordering
i've got alot of search engines, so it's nice to be able to put them all in order. you can just drag them around in the menu, or delete the ones you don't like.
https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/2164/

Search Engine Wizard
this lets you right-click in a search box and add a new search engine
https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/2206/

VideoDownloader
download videos from over 60 sites, like Metacafe, Google and youtube.
https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/2390/

bugmenot
lets you login to places you don't have passwords for.
http://roachfiend.com/archives/2005/02/07/bugmenot/

Wayback
it takes you to the waybackmachine for the page you are on, which is good when the page has disappeared

I wan
s having about 15 extensions and many thesmes but I notuiced they make the launch of Firefox too slow, so I trimmed down aggressively, now having--

SpoofStick
SiteAdvisor
Robofrorm
All in one sidebar

with Noia extreme theme.

So these are my must haves.
Anyway I could do it as my main browser is Opera.
BTW, a bit OT but I will like to ask, is there any skin for opera just like Noia extreme( I like this ff skin too much).

Extensions for FireFox are intended to enhance your FireFox experience. Do a before and after analysis and keep those which are helpful and un-install the others.

Every time FireFox offers an upgrade, some extensions are dropped due to in-compatibility because the author has not updated its contents. Many of those so called "in-compatibile" are still fully functional. I use an extension called Nightly Tester Tools. This extensions adds a "Make All Compatible" button to the Extension display. This has worked very well for me because I have a couple extensions ("Download With") which is really important to me and this extension makes them workable. Needless to say, backups of FireFox are always recommended.

Check my Firefox link below should you want to know more about which extensions I use on a regular basis.

I guess I should have asked "....AND WHY?!"

anyway when I wrote that I may not have had even one extension, but now I have quite a few. I decided to post my collections which I have catagorized. Ones that almost everyone has posted I may have ommitted.

The important catagories to the potential extension trier are the gifts that keep giving. One you have set them up your life is better!

Greasemonkey is God's gift to geeks (which I am not, BTW)

I included ones I never use so you can tell me if I have missed anything

That movie thing kind of bugs me - There is no free lunch, why kid ourselves?
I question the safety, legality, and ease of use. Rebuttal?

Special thanks go out to Wilders moderators for two of my favorites:
-Spoofstick
-Google Customizer

Special thanks go out to Nat and others for the weatherbug, and smilelys... except all this time and I still haven't actually got them...neat ideas though!

a few critical (IMO) ones not listed yet

Image Zoom (https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/139/)
lots of Rclick options from Image fit to set percentages or define and automatic resizing with various mouse click combinations

CoLT (https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/1812/)
adds RClick Copy Link Text, Copy Link Location, Copy Link Text & Location as several code options (custom, html, BBtext ect). Lets you slam out the links when coding posts, blogs or news. easily convert html link code to BBcode or plain text on the fly

Cache View (https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/2323/) RClick link and select Google's Cache, Coral's Cache, Wayback Machine's Cache, Dot Cache, Tech Guru's Cache, and Cachebin's cache. Raise dead links from the grave
Highly recommended ;D

British English Dictionary (https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/3366/) (though youd never guess that from my misspelled posts) :-*

Forecastfox Enhanced (https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/1978/)

and I too have been playing around with zotero (https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/3504/)
as well as Web Search Pro (https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/552/)

This problem is fixed in FF2.0.0.1 - see http://www.mozilla.org/security/announce/2006/mfsa2006-75.html

Other issues:
To prevent the newly introduced "super cookies" set "dom.storage.enabled" to "false" - see http://kb.mozillazine.org/Dom.storage.enabled
Web bugs: In older FF versions a checkbox under “Tools → Options → Content” was available to allow loading images “for the originating web site only". In FF 2.x this checkbox is no longer available. You can control this behaviour now via "permissions.default.image" - see http://kb.mozillazine.org/Permissions.default.image . A more convenient way on per site basis is the extension ImgLikeOpera where you can block images not from the originating site by default but specify sites where you allow them.

I think what she is referring to as far as it calling Google has to to with the phishing site filter\warning. You can go into Tools\Options\Security and remove the check mark from "Tell me if a site I am visiting is suspected of forgery". Or leave that check mark in place and chose from the other options they offer to get a list from.
As far as favicons, they can be disabled in about:config. browser.chrome.favicons set to false. As far as the RSS feeds, I do not use them so I do not really know or worry about them.

Wikipedia

Some that i bookmarked, but not sure:
HostIP.info Geolocation Plugin (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/663) any better ones?
SafeDownload (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3581) useful? don't know, maybe in GNU/Linux to scan downloads, to be sure before sending to XP friends.
VirusTotal (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/4451) doubt the usefulness, but..
Process Library (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/4461) again, using the bookmark isn't that hard, but..
Open In RegEdit (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/4478) this is mighty interesting, to follow advice given on the net for troubleshooting the registry; could save time and mistakes.
SCM (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/4555) "SCM performs Site Continuity Management validations on websites to help prevent Pharming attacks. " I have no idea if it serves any purpose; maybe when using public networks, and be sure DNS isn't bad?

And others that i read in this thread. Like Zotero, Spoofstick, FlashBlock, Wayback, Bugmenot. Anyone care to enlight me what they do / how they help you?

I am just curious, why do so many run FiltersetG.updater with Ad-block Plus when the author of ABP himself advises against it?

From http://adblockplus.org/en/faq_project

Do I need to install Filterset.G Updater?

No. Actually, it is recommended not to use Filterset.G with Adblock Plus. There are several reasons for this:

Filterset.G has been intentionally made incompatible with the built-in subscriptions feature in Adblock Plus, updating Filterset.G requires a separate extension which basically duplicates existing functionality.
Filterset.G is not optimized for use with Adblock Plus, it will slow down your browsing considerably more than any other filter list.
Filterset.G makes heavy use of very complicated regular expressions with the consequence that finding the source of problems is difficult and fixing those problems is even more so. In fact, Filterset.G is fixing most problems with exception rules which creates a problem on its own (see next point).
Filterset.G contains a considerable number of exception rules. This is a big problem because exception rules cannot be overridden. It happened on several occasions that exception rules from Filterset.G whitelisted actual ads making these ads unblockable — something users usually blamed Adblock Plus for. While Filterset.G has had its uses in the past, nowadays other filter lists are certainly a better choice. If you already have Filterset.G Updater installed, you can uninstall the extension and remove the Filterset.G subscription in the Adblock Plus Preferences dialog. Feel free to choose any subscription from the list then.

proxomitron uses a different page when it gets a 40* that's why it might not work, maybe it does, i haven't tried it.

I always assumed they made browsing much quicker, depending on what the priorities of the Firefox user are. Extensions which block the downloading of unwanted content, referral to other sites must. If downloading files can be considered part of the browsing experience, they say that that can be sped up with extensions. If avoiding spoofed sites, phishing scams could be considered to save you time in the long run. If extensions that help you search better are net savers of time...You get the idea...

These are the ones I always use and find browsing life difficult and a bit boring when I am on a computer that doesnt have them.
I use foxbackup to be sure I never have to find and install all the extensions again when I do a re format or a new snapshot.

Well, i thought i could surprise Iceni with an extension, but i see you got it already (Update Scanner):P
But i got two others and a non extension (the same as Update Scanner):

Update Scanner (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3362) - "Monitors web pages for updates. Useful for websites that don't provide Atom or RSS feeds."
Mr Uptime (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/5490) - "Have you ever tried accessing a website and it didn’t respond? Of course you have. We all have! Mr Uptime is an extension to your Firefox browser that will keep trying to reach that website in the background while you continue surfing on other websites. When the website is accessible again, Mr Uptime will let you know. You can also use Mr Uptime when a website responds but doesn’t load correctly."
LiveClick (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2499) - "Live Bookmarks are one of Firefox's best features, but they're missing a way to quickly access a Live Bookmark's home page without having to create an additional bookmark, go through lots of extra clicks, or type in the address manually. LiveClick fixes this oversight.
With LiveClick, you can also:
* Mark Live Bookmark items as 'read'
* Receive alerts when select Live Bookmarks have new items
* Use site icons (aka favicons) in place of the default RSS icon
* Preview a site's feed by right-clicking the RSS icon in the address bar
* Create Live Bookmarks by right-clicking the page or a feed link"
WebMonX (http://sniperbeamer.de/webmonx/) - NOT a FF extension - "WebMonX monitors websites for updates and changes - it saves you time and always keeps you up-to-date by periodically checking these pages at set intervals.
WebMonX is free/open-source software (licensed under GPLv2) and is a cross-platform (works on *nix and Windows) port of WebMon. "

Hm - while the extensions you mentioned are certainly good and useful for safe browsing, I'm a little bit astonished that you don't use extensions that I regard as some of the most important, namely Noscript (especially against the background of XSS becoming more and more popular), SecureLogin and Adblock Plus (while the latter was never intended as a security tool, a report (http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,130129-pg,1/article.html) by Finjan said that 80% of all malicious code are supplied through online ads - so this protective function is an "unvoluntary" but highly welcome side-effect). Would you elaborate why?

Actually, I am using protection covering everything you mention here. Perhaps not the ones you think are best.

LinkScanner Pro is doing much the same as Noscript does as with SiteAdvisor (in a different way). (Although No script is a very good tool I may even reinstall again, it slows me down considerably when I do research.... Too many things blocked unnecessarily by default).

Besides the problem with NoScript is that it doesn't fully discriminate between a good or a bad script, while Linkscanner Pro does scan the scripts themselves for hostile code as with SiteAdvisor. It also works as a pre scan when you do Searches on the many engines providing pre emptive scans. Besides simply blocking a site scripting doesn't mean that you are protected in the advent you need to access the site scripted content. It is almost entirely based on trust and not on the factual knowledge that the one specific script is in fact hostile or not... You could decide the site is good and unlock the script and get infected. It does next to nothing to protect you against that. I am a strong supporter of ProActive script scanning on web sites since they warn you before hand based on fact and also provide a rating system. (Albeit imperfect at the present it is getting better).

I use RoboForm instead of secure login, It does provide more of what I need, and AdBlock Plus is handled by my antispyware...

On a side note, probably one of the most serious form of attack none of those tools can protect you agains is buffer overflow, I use Comodo Memory Guardian, (Previously using DEP only would allow most ret2libc attacks) but without much success as many attacks did get through, although intercepted on my machine by CMG, I can just guess the invisible damage on other's

How much of LinkScanner is a blacklist scanner and NoScript being a near perfect whitelist.
But lets keep this for extensions please gentlemen.

Context Search

Second Search
Second Search provides a feature to search by other engines directly, without switching the engine of the web-search bar. you can see in the picture on it's page, you just use the up arrow button to select it in the search box. -

Bookmark this page Plus
just like Opera, when you want to bookmark a page you navigate to the place in your bookmark menu where you want to save the bookmark and select Bookmark this page :P

i got another one too called Flat bookmark editing, but i don't know what it does, at the page they were all saying how good it is lol.

Just installed "nosquint". Very good for those who find the need to frequently change the text size due to their OS's font rendering or their irrational refusal to admit they may need glasses. You can change the default settings for all sites, or do it on a site to sight basis. It also allows changing text size by using Ctrl + scroll wheel.

For anyone who regulary uses two different search engines, say Google and Wikipedia or in my case Google and Swedish National Encyclopedia (I often, among other things, use their Swedish/English dictionary since english is not my native language).
Well, maybe life would go on without it, but it is one of those things that makes things just nice. A little thing I didnt know I needed until I found out about it :)

The extension Firekeeper (http://firekeeper.mozdev.org/) has already been mentioned in this thread. It's an Intrusion Detection and Prevention System for Firefox that detects a lot of attacks (including XSS attacks).

I'm aware of the following blocklists (which are regularly updated) that can be used in Firekeeper:
There are two lists on http://www.malware.com.br/ - a regular and an agressive one (I haven't tried the latter yet).
Another list for Firekeeper can be found on http://doc.bleedingthreats.net/bin/view/Main/SnortConfSamples .Just copy the URL of the respective list, go to Preferences in Firekeeper, click "Add remote file" and paste the URL therein. It takes some seconds until the list is loaded. Click "enable".

Firekeeper versions for Windows and Linux are available on http://firekeeper.mozdev.org/installation.html . You will have to add that site to the list of sites in Firefox which are allowed to install extensions. (Note: On a Linux machine you will probably get an update to Firekeeper version 0.3.1 after a while).

tlu,

Does running Firefox with NoScript accomplish some of what Firekeeper is trying to accomplish? This is assuming that you block lists globally and only allow some sites to run scripts.

Yes, I agree. On the other hand Firekeeper might be able to warn you if a site contains malware/is manipulated particularly if it is whitelisted in Noscript. Thus it may provide an additional layer of protection. I doubt that there is an advantage if the site is already blacklisted in Noscript. But even in these cases a warning might give you a hint that this site is suspicious.

Some addtional info for users planning to run Firekeeper: I had no problems to run it under Windows and Firefox 3.0 but got an error "Firekeeper load failed component @firekeeper.mozdev.org/firekeeper not registered ..." with FF 3 on Ubuntu 8.04. I contacted the author of Firekeeper, Jan Wrobel, and got the following info:

-{ Quote: "I investigated this problem. It turned out that 3 libraries
that Firekeeper depends on and that are part of Firefox are shipped in
Ubuntu under different names.
Workaround for this issue is to create symbolic link to these
libraries:
ln -s /usr/lib/libnspr4.so.0d /usr/lib/libnspr4.so;
ln -s /usr/lib/libplds4.so.0d /usr/lib/libplds4.so;
ln -s /usr/lib/libplc4.so.0d /usr/lib/libplc4.so;
If you already have Firekeeper installed you need to install it again
after links are created.

It seems there is also problem with some other extensions not working
on Ubuntu 8.04 due to this issue. There is an open bug for this so
I hope it gets fixed." }-
This solved my problem, indeed.:)

I find it very slow and boring to surf without Firegestures. (http://www.xuldev.org/firegestures/)
For example when you read a page with many interesting links, just hold right mouse button and make a move (you can customize what gesture you want, I have move right) over the links and they open in new tabs in bakground for later viewing. Perfect if you´re viewing a page with many thumbnails and want to see the full picture of them all, just load them in the bakground. You can connect many functions in the browser to a gesture. If the default actions are not enough and If youre into making scripts you can do everything with gestures. It takes a short while to remember all the gestures you´ve made for different tasks, but once you learnt that it is really hard to be with out them, very addictive.

I won't use it all the time, but when i need it, it's 2 seconds.

Over time, I have been slowly divesting myself of extensions and plug-ins. Several went by the wayside when I went to FireFox 3; several more shortly thereafter. Not doing this for performance reasons; I had no problems running a dozen extensions, just decided that if I did not use or need the function that I did not need the extension, either.

FireFTP was not ready with FF3, so I went with FileZilla (and like it better).
Sage was replaced with the free version of FeedGhost.
MinimizeToTray was just dropped.
TabMixPlus ran the DEV build for awhile but has since been just dropped as well.

The only extensions remaining are these (http://pc.akajohndoe.com/browsers.htm).

Perhaps its a GNU/Linux incompatibility.

I chose Fast Video Download (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3590) for now. It will get the video's name and ask to save it with that name. Good :)
That little detail is actually better than in Unplug, but i don't know if it can work with as many sites. Unplug seemed to work with some generic method.

In browser or separate program.

BTW, one can make Unplug compatible (sort of) by editing the maxVersion in install.rdf of the xpi package, or using the MR Tech Toolkit (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/421).
It doesn't solve any problem, it only makes Firefox accept it.

There is a relatively new list available for Adblock Plus (http://adblockplus.org/blog/blocking-malicious-sites-with-adblock-plus) that blocks more than 40,000 malicious websites! The list is compiled and updated by http://malwaredomains.com/ .

Two important remarks:
1. The list won't prevent you from going to one of these blocked sites - "but it will block for example any iframes or Flash objects from this domain" (quote ABP author Wladimir Palant).
2. According to this (http://adblockplus.org/en/subscriptions) site, do not subscribe to this list with Firefox 2! It will only be sufficiently fast in Firefox 3, and even then you have to accept 3-4 seconds delay at browser startup and shutdown. It won’t cause noticeable delays during browsing however.

(Note: On a Linux machine you will probably get an update to Firekeeper version 0.3.1 after a while)." }-

Primarily I have used Opera as my default browser because I have little ue for the many varied addons that FF offers. However I have been giving it another try lately and may have been sold by the following.
Fast Dial (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/5721) Have always liked this feature in Opera, but so far the developers have resisted the many cries to make it customizable to vary the number of panes you can have. FF has this functionality.

I have been using SpeedDial (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/4810) and it has essentially replaced bookmarks for me.

I have SpeedDial configured with Tabs (20 of them) and each Tab has 16 Thumbnails (in a 4 x 4 layout), so I have 320 websites right on my Tabbed "Home Page". I did set each thumbnail to never refresh (unless I explicitly tell it to) since I didn't want to incur the overhead of the refresh process for 320 websites!

Gotta have:
AdBlock Plus - and don't forget to subscribe to a list
(I think AdBlock is the universally agreed-on Must Have ext).
Fire ftp - fantastic ftp program, if you use one.
Fire Shot - screen shot saver.
KeyScrambler (for IE, too) - encrypt-as-you-type for password entries.
WOT (Web of Trust) - danger rating for web pages, links, etc.
Mozilla QA Companion - to help Mozilla test.
Send to Google Docs - pdf's to on-line Google-reader vs. (ugh) Adobe Reader.
Fire Tune - tweaks for speed.

Google Toolbar is nice, if you use a lot of Google services,
and you can use Google [permanent] Bookmarks vs. Foxmarks.

I didn't care for NoScript - too many blocked-items to deal with.
And Foxmarks is a nice concept, but it slows Firefox down.
I also didn't like the GMail Notifier ext as much as the one on Google Toolbar.

Yes I see that, have not looked closely at the google setup of this, however, it was an Opera setup, I and many others asked Opera developers to make it customizable so we could have more than 9 panes (Opera has 9 panes on their speed dial)
To date there has been no option to increase the number, since it is a feature I use quite a lot I have been drawn to FF where I can have just about as many as I want with my chosen version Fast Dial
I never get caught up in foolish loyalties, all software is a tool to perform a task, when I find one that performs the task I require better I switch, so far FF looks like it performs what I require better than Opera, so it looks like I am switching

Yeah, I wasn't saying that allowing scripts globally was the best plan, just that if Lupatrian wasn't going to use NoScript because of not wanting to deal with blocked items that there was still protection to be gained even with scripts allowed globally.

AdBlockPlus - a good trade-off in adblocking between speed, ease-of-use and effectivity
ABP Blocklists - EasyList, Easy Element, Malware.Com and some local + persona lists
ABP+ Element Hiding Helper - for those frame/text/div ads
Classic Compact Theme - to maximize the html rendering area of the window and minimize toolbar
CS Lite - easy permanent cookie allow by domain (block by default)
CustomizeGoogle - Mainly to change default search language without being logged in to google account
Download Statusbar - because the Downloas window is too big
DownThemAll! - decent enough mass downloader
GreaseMonkey - for some site specific kill scripts
Linkification - turn text URLs into linked / clickable URLs
NoScript - with Allow global on by default (don't ask)
Perspectives - to handle / check those SSL certificate issues
RefControl - to spoof referers by domain basis
SSL Blacklist - SSL security... now testing
Ubiquity - great community sharing based script automation - still under beta/construction
Undo Closed Tabs Button - movable button for a pop-up menu of closed tabs (undo list)
Undoclosetab - helps with the control of undo closed tabs in a way that is not configurable within FF3 by default
Wikilook - great addition to look up words in a tooltip type window, without opening another tab

Went through some search enhancing addons, and think this is a nice one indeed. What i don't understand is why Web Search Pro didn't work for me (same author), but this one did.

I've also added:
Add to Search Bar (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3682) - Just make a right click with the mouse pointer on top of *the page's* search box and choose "Add to Search Bar..."
Organize Search Engines (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/4565) - Organize your search engines with separators and folders.
This is definitely only for power users with dozens of installed search engines. But those will surely appreciate it.
Context Search (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/240) - Expands the context menu's 'Search for' item into a list of installed search engines. Hold Ctrl or middle-click to open results in a new tab, Shift to open a new window.
This one fits perfectly with Organize Search Engines. It's basically a context menu entry for your already installed engines.

I already added 2 search engines, and organized the least frequently used in folders. Google and Wikipedia for instance are outside the folders for normal/quick use.

termBlaster (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1720) - termBlaster adds the ability to perform searches from your right-click (or context) menu using one of 110+ websites that range from search engines to encyclopedias to translators. Website lists are in XML format and can be modified in your Bookmarks Organizer.
I'm waiting for 2.0 to make up my mind. 2 context menu entries, quick list and a search engine' jungle for, well everything :)
With the default Firefox Google entry, it's perfect. Quick search, not so quick, and special search.

I'm juggling with these to see which to keep. I'll probably do away with termBlaster or Context Search. I'm waiting for termBlaster 2.0 which should solve a problem i have editing the quick list.

I bookmarked also (not using) :
SearchWith (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2194), since it's also good. You choose 1 search engine per "Service" (blog, dictionary, encyclopedia etc.). It's simple to use like that for someone who wants just that, but i found it limiting when i wanted more.
SearchLoad Options (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3544) - Tweak the searchbar's functionality.

I bothered with this long post since i lost a lot of time (and patience) in the addons maze. Perhaps it can save someone frustration.

For me, AutoPager is a real "must have" Firefox extension. If you browse multi-page forum threads or websites, , I believe you will like it too. With this extension, you will not have to click on next page for it to load next. The next page will already be loaded when you are ready for viewing . Extract:

of the current page for infinite scrolling of content and more."https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/4925

Recently I imported my del.icio.us bookmarks (http://delicious.com/wilbert) in the Firefox 3 places.sqlite database.
And so I discovered that as long as I used del.icio.us as my main bookmarking service I was ignoring the Smart Location Ba (http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Smart+Location+Bar)r features that is offered by Firefox 3.
Now I also enabled my browsing history, because that also shows in the Smart Location Bar.

With the bookmark tags I probably don't need del.icio.us anymore, as long as I backup and synchronize my bookmarks with the extension foxmarks (http://www.foxmarks.com/).
I'm actually surprised that no social bookmarking service has started to integrate it's service with the Firefox 3 bookmarks databse.

I use Lastpass (https://lastpass.com/) as my password manager.
Also the Free Download Manager (http://www.freedownloadmanager.org/) extension is installed.
And today I discovered feedly (http://feedly.com/), which integrates my Google reader subscriptions in a pretty home page.

Does anyone know about a service that integrates social bookmarking with the Firefox 3 bookmarks database?

Oh, I almost forgot auto dial (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/8615), which creates a nice speed dial page based on browsing history. It shows in new tabs.

I've also found Read It Later (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/7661) is a nice way to quickly save web pages, for example an article, that I don't want to permanently add to bookmarks.

I also use Hyperwords for multi-search, but have been trying out an experimental add-on called Searchbastard (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/8030), thus far I'm finding it pretty handy. Also allows you to clean up search results to varying degrees, no adds etc.

http://www.07designs.com/gdark/

i hacked mine and added Linux and Video to the searches 8)

i got Personal Menu too, i hid the menubar and have my bookmarks and a tiny menu like button next to the addressbar -
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3895

i get a bit scared when i upload screenshots incase there's something strange in the screenshot :lurking:

Not an add-on / extension, but handy none the less. If you use FF to save your online passwords, you notice that not all sites permit password saving. Here's a solution:

I had applied this patch some months ago and, yes, it works very well. Under Ubuntu (and probably other Linux distros) nsLoginManager.js can be found in /usr/lib/xulrunner-x.x.x.x/components. Replace x.x.x.x by the newest version - up to 3.0.5 it was 1.9.0.5, now there is a new xulrunner version 1.9.0.6. So after updates you might need to repeat these changes - although already saved passwords for those mentioned sites can still be used. Patching nsLoginManager.js is thus only necessary for new sites that do not permit saving passwords.

Amazing how useful Stylish (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2108) can be.

I removed the throbber, and added Combined Stop, Refresh, and Throbber buttons! (http://userstyles.org/styles/3228) instead of just stop and reload. Clicking the throbber stops reloading.
Added Hide Progress Bar from Statusbar (http://userstyles.org/styles/12878), and tweaked Sliding Text & Icon Menubar for Firefox 3 (http://http://userstyles.org/styles/9271) to remove the icons and use Iceweasel's favicon. This one hides the menu, then when your mouse hovers the Iceweasel icon, the menu appears:
210704
210705
IMO much better than Personal Menu extension, or Autohide menubar tricks.
The stop/reload/throbber button:
210706

Stylish is basically the same as using userchrome.css (http://www.mozilla.org/unix/customizing.html#usercss), only you can enable and disable stuff individually, with a good UI and without restarting Firefox/Iceweasel.
You can do things like changing statusbar/menubar/tab height, removing context-menu items (http://userstyles.org/styles/5446) (...)
I even added http://userstyles.org/ to my search bar :P

Linux specific, KDE4:
I'm using Strata Human (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/8105) theme right now (simple and nice), with this fix for KDE4:
@namespace url(http://www.mozilla.org/keymaster/gatekeeper/there.is.only.xul);
menulist {
-moz-appearance: menulist !important;
}
.menulist-dropmarker {
display: none !important;
}

Save it as a new style and name it whatever you like - something descriptive, like "FIX - themes cause dbl combo box arrows"

Explore this tool well!

Another advantage to Stylish which i forgot is the ability to Preview the style you're about to import, or your tweaks / new styles. Editing is a breeze because of that.
Doesn't need to be fancy things, just tweaking status bar's height for instance is made easy and fast with this preview facility. 5-preview, 3-preview .. :P

Imglikeopera (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1672)

I haven't tried it myself.

Instead, I made a custom toolbar button to toggle images on and off.

The maker of Toolbar Buttons 0.6.0.5 (an add on that adds over a hundred toolbar buttons to Mozilla apps) has a custom button maker (http://codefisher.org/toolbar_button/toolbar_button_maker) on his website.

If your interested, the Toggle Images button is in the second column, about 2/3s of the way down the page.

The button simply toggle the option in Firefox found here:
Tools/Options/Content/Load images automatically.
It just allows you to do it without digging through the menus.

Firefox also allows you to add exceptions to this rule.
