Tab Mix Plus (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1122)
But that one is outdated. You can get the latest build (http://tmp.garyr.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=9864) at the author's website.

I haven't tried it myself.
Instead, I made a custom toolbar button to toggle images on and off.
The maker of Toolbar Buttons 0.6.0.5 (an add on that adds over a hundred toolbar buttons to Mozilla apps) has a custom button maker (http://codefisher.org/toolbar_button/toolbar_button_maker) on his website.
If your interested, the Toggle Images button is in the second column, about 2/3s of the way down the page.
The button simply toggle the option in Firefox found here:
Tools/Options/Content/Load images automatically.
It just allows you to do it without digging through the menus.
Firefox also allows you to add exceptions to this rule." }-
All of them u mentioned require manual page refreesh.It doesnt do image block on the fly.

What's wrong with Adblock Plus?

I am trying out this theme:
http://boneyardbrew.deviantart.com/art/Firefox-3-7-Mockup-Redux-2-5-130502568
Of course Adblock+ and Noscript is installed with a lot more addons. But its all hidden for maximum visibility. Also using "Organize Status Bar" addon to hide status bar symbols :) The search bar is together with the "AwesomeBar" through the "Omnibar" addon.
Look at this stunning result:

Hope it was not mentioned before.Found an interesting privacy-security addon "RequestPolicy".
I Think it requires patience at the beginning as with no script,or you may experience problems viewing some websites.
Also the developer recommands this as an companion to no script
(RequestPolicy is not a replacement for NoScript! Each focuses on different, important issues. For the best security, we recommend using both RequestPolicy and NoScript.)
From the decription
"RequestPolicy is an extension that improves the privacy and security of your browsing by giving you control over when cross-site requests are allowed by webpages you visit.
Cross-site requests are requests that your browser is told to make by a website you are visiting to a completely different website. Though usually legitimate requests, they often result in advertising companies and other websites knowing your browsing habits, including specific pages you view throughout the day. Among the attacks that cross-site requests are used in, they are particularly dangerous with Cross-Site Request Forgery (CSRF) attacks where your browser is told to make a request to another website and that other website thinks you (the person) meant to make the request."

I use v 3.9.3 which to my knowledge is the latest one and it highlights the current tab - but I had to recheck the "highlight the currently selected tab" option

Problem is, it hides things a little too well - even the controls on small windows.
Hide Caption Titlebar Plus may therefore be a better choice (haven't tested it yet):

Update: It works beautifully, does what it says on the tin. If you think the close button is too prominent, you can edit windowControls.png in Photoshop.

That's the version I have and there is no difference between any of the tabs as far as which one is current. I have checked "highlight the currently selected tab".

wenever i try to use the glasser add-on to get that glass effect, it keeps screwing up and only half the top part of the browser goes glass and the other half stays the same....
rolarocka
September 13th, 2009, 11:10 AM
What glasser addon are you using? You only need StataGlass and no other glass addon.
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/14288/
It could also be an incompatibility with other addons.
Try a new profile and keep adding addons until it breaks the glass effect.
Use FEBE to export the installed addons and themes to a single folder and drag and drop them to the firefox addons page of the new profile, its faster.

When I used Firefox I found Yahoo Mail Notifier quite handy. It entered my Yahoo user name and password at Firefox startup and I didn't have to use their cookie or enter it manually to open My Yahoo start page. I also used Image Zoom so I could get a closer look at the smaller pictures.
SourMilk out.

Those of you using Update Scanner will probably be interested in this one.
From Omnibar's developer, AlertBox (https://addons.mozilla.org/pt-PT/firefox/addon/13587). You get to chose what part of the page you want to monitor (think Aardvark or ABP's Element Hiding Helper), and that should significantly reduce FP's.
Still in active development, and i haven't tried it extensively yet. The results (changes) don't seem intuitive to read, but that could be related to the test page i tried (Wilders' New Posts page).
Beta'ish.
If you try it, please report your findings :)

For myself, two "must have" add-ons are the following:
Tab Kit (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/5447) (to which I switched away from Tab Mix Plus)
and
Secure Login (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/4429) (saves me the trouble of dealing with countless login forms, on my Portable Firefox (http://portableapps.com/apps/internet/firefox_portable) that resides in TrueCrypt container)
In regards to ad blocking extensions, - I do not use them. And as a webmaster who uses sane placement and amount of Goggle ads, I hope for the same in regards to my visitors. Do to others what you would like to be done to you :)

maximum browser screen

I just merged the tabbar and the statusbar heh. Using TMP to move the tabbar to the bottom:
/* Merge Tabbar and Statusbar*/
@namespace url(http://www.mozilla.org/keymaster/gatekeeper/there.is.only.xul);
.tabbrowser-tab {
max-height: 20px !important;
}
.tabbrowser-tabs {
max-height: 28px !important;
}
.tabbrowser-tabs {
margin-bottom: -28px !important;
padding: 0px 450px 0px 0px !important;
}
#status-bar > #statusbar-display[label] {
visibility: hidden !important;
}
It should show different for you, but that's only because Iceweasel is heavily tweaked over here. Everything is tweaked, so tweaked i don't know why google has a "Show options..." button or why the copy and paste isn't in the context menu anymore.. !
212770
The 450 is the right margin, increase it to move the margin to the left or decrease it to move right. Scroll to navigate it as usual.
The last bit hides the "Done" text and links etc. It's also important to scroll the tabs, otherwise focus is flaky. I'm using the Tooltip Plus (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/11481) addon for that - and i've also hidden the progress bar, progress is shown in the tab itself + stop/reload/throbber button.
It simply moves the tabbar on top of the statusbar.
Now i'm going to try this for a few days to see how practical it is. It's weird at first for sure but it's an interesting experience :P
Maybe i can reverse it and merge it with the navigation. But then, what do i do with the statusbar?

I've also changed the "Sliding Text & Icon Menubar for Firefox 3" style i mentioned in post #239. It doesn't slide anymore (flaky behavior), only shows icons, added Scrapbook icon, and i changed the other icons for more intuitive ones.

Merge the two if you prefer, i have them separated because that's how i installed them from userstyles.org before tweaking them. It's also better to troubleshoot/tweak.

The problem with my first attempt at "Merge Tabbar and Statusbar" was that, when i opened Zotero, the tabs went with it, and resulted in a mess..
212805
Then i found the solution in Merge Findbar and Statusbar (http://userstyles.org/styles/19686) app style. It fixes the position, rather than lowering the original position (whatever that was).
It now reads:
/* Merge Tabbar and Statusbar*/
@namespace url(http://www.mozilla.org/keymaster/gatekeeper/there.is.only.xul);
.tabbrowser-tab {
max-height: 20px !important;
}
.tabbrowser-tabs {
max-height: 28px !important;
}
.tabbrowser-tabs {
-moz-border-radius: 2px !important;
-moz-appearance: none !important;
position: fixed !important;
bottom: 0 !important;
margin: 0px 575px 5px 0px !important;
height: 17px !important;
padding: 0px 0px 2px 0px !important;
}
#status-bar > #statusbar-display[label] {
visibility: hidden !important;
}
The last bit is likely not needed anymore.
Zotero's controls are now free, the tabbar is left at the bottom with the statusbar. phew :P
212806
Stylish is fantastic!

jeez, i reread this thread and go to the FF add-on site also, and there are just way too many cool extensions to ever use....its just like all the free security software - too much good stuff, and i could never learnhow to use all these cool add-ons and programs in 5 lifetimes.... :(

In an effort to devote even more real estate to the browser window, I found a userstlye for stylish/greasemonkey that removes the scroll bar.
Many do this, but with a loss of mouse-wheel scrolling.
This loses the scrollbar but keeps the ability to scroll with the mouse wheel. Anyway, it's a silly aestheitc preference, but if you're interested:

Yeah and the interesting thing is it achieves that with no additional addons like stylish etc.

Dont know if that makes sense from an ergonomic viewpoint... perhaps it's better to keep the lower part of the screen for the less important stuff.
Here's one 'must have' that is not an extension... :)

I'm on a laptop, and the difference pays off for me. It's not perfect, but with the Fission addon everything makes sense. I'm beginning to question TMP usefulness too. It only makes things harder to tweak and troubleshoot.

There seems to be 2 addons as well. Did you notice any difference when you tried it?

Tab Mix Plus is probably not the way to go if you want to keep things pure and simple. Hide Caption Titlebar Plus is a great way to minimise real estate in that area:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/13505
As for the status bar, there's a script available for auto-hiding it in Stylish.

It sure keeps my places.dat trimmed nicely, and it's a nice plus that it does the others too. Startups are lightning fast anyway so I can't really tell the difference! :P

The auto-hiding tricks never convinced me in full. Behaviour seems flaky when i need it the most, like autohiding when i don't want it to, showing when i don't it to. Specially with menus.
The hide caption is nice at work, even if half baked. It does indeed help, and with my status bar tweak it's almost like seeing websites in a desktop computer ;D Last time i tried it in Linux it just twitches all over the place.

Try this:
@namespace url(http://www.mozilla.org/keymaster/gatekeeper/there.is.only.xul);
@-moz-document url(chrome://browser/content/browser.xul) {
#status-bar { border-top: 1px solid ButtonShadow !important; }

#status-bar:hover,
#status-bar:focus,

}

Seems to work ok Pinga. But ime it gets annoying with time. What if i want to access something in the bottom of the website?
And the area available is too small to be convenient for me. I don't want to aim and shoot, i just want to use the buttons when needed.
I guess this is the better side of Firefox's 'configurability'. You can't please everyone. :)

Trying out Smart Find (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/8497) - "In this extension, we present an improvement to the Find method in Firefox, which allows a user to find a word by just giving clues to the method. SmartFind allows the user to use the traditional methods to find a word and as such integrates with these methods in a completely transparent way."
New Tab Page (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/13005) - My new home page for a while. Simple and useful, hope there will be updates. You can add new search engines, but until he adds that feature, you have to edit extensions/newtabpage@dev.danielc.net/chrome/content/newtab.html in your profile folder.
As an example, to add yahoo, add:
<div class="task" id="SearchYahoo">
<h2><img src="chrome://newtabpage/content/images/yahoo.ico" /> Search Yahoo</h2>
<form action="http://search.yahoo.com/search">
<input id="yahoo_search" name="p" type="text" size="24" />
<input id="yahoo_submit" type="image" src="chrome://newtabpage/content/images/Search.png" />
</form>
</div>
right after
<div class="task" id="SearchGoogle">
<h2><img src="chrome://newtabpage/content/images/google.ico" /> Search Google</h2>
<form action="http://www.google.com.au/search">
<input id="google_search" name="q" type="text" size="24" />
<input id="google_submit" type="image" src="chrome://newtabpage/content/images/Search.png" />
</form>

I wonder if it does more than you can get with Noscript and Adblock Plus. Noscript blocks Googleanalytics, Doubleclicks and the likes, and the ABP filters do the rest. And I block cookies by default, of course, with Cookie Monster and allow them only for selected sites. Google doesn't belong to them ;D These measures should definitely be sufficient.

Some sites, like IMDB, prevent you from performing certain actions, like right clicking, on their pages.
Firefox extension RightToClick (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/12572/) disables these scripts, giving you the ability to right click, select text,
or perform other actions forbidden by a given web site.
After installing the add-on, you'll notice a new green cursor icon in your toolbar or status bar (depending on your Firefox setup).
If you stumble upon a site that won't let you perform certain actions on their pages,
just click RightToClick (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/12572/)'s icon to disable that JavaScript.
The icon will animate and you'll be able to bring up the context menu,
select text, drag and drop,and do any of the other things the site originally disabled.
There aren't a ton of web sites out there that disable these actions,
but it's a handy add-on to have around if you frequent a site that does.

While this extension might be useful, it should be noted that it's not yet reviewed by Mozilla! Considering the fact that an extension that had not been reviewed by Mozilla had to be removed from AMO (http://blog.mozilla.com/addons/2010/07/13/add-on-security-announcement/) because it was malicious, I would not recommend to install such an add-on.

For me it's: AdBlock Plus, NoScript, CookieSafe, Ghostery, OptimizeGoogle, WOT, RefControl, Better Privacy, QuickRestart.
Greasemonkey can be very handy with some good scripts. There are some to make Facebook much safer. When they added that annoying grey bar to the bottom of Youtube subscription pages I grabbed G.M. to add a script to block that. Once I found a way to accomplish the same with an ABP rule G.M. is less useful to me now (I don't use Facebook either).
I'll take a look at some of the others mentioned here too.

I heard that "Ghostery" has been sold to an advertising company now (Better Advertising). Generally this is a cause for concern, but after looking at the companies website it seems on the surface that what they actually do is enforce privacy standards upon advertising companies. And the original creator of Ghostery made a blog ensuring everybody that the add-on is in "good hands"... but what would you expect them to say under such circumstances?
So I don't know what to believe. I do really like this add-on, and I don't see another one that could adequately replace it. But if I feel that "the jig is up", so to speak, I'll kick it to the curb.
Does anybody have any more information on this subject... the reputation of this "Better Privacy" company, ect...?

On 5th May this year the last of the 13 authoritative root servers for the domain name system switched over to the DNS Security Extensions (DNSSEC) security protocol. DNSSEC is intended to prevent DNS exploits such as cache poisoning. (http://www.h-online.com/security/news/item/DNSSEC-on-all-root-servers-updated-994744.html)
More background reading is this (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dnssec).
There is a Firefox extension called DNSSEC Validator (https://addons.mozilla.org/de/firefox/addon/64247/?src=api) which checks if a domain is secured by DNSSEC. Details can be found on their homepage (http://www.dnssec-validator.cz/). In its preferences under "Resolver" you usually have to chose the second option.
Unfortunately, most domains - and notably banking sites - are NOT yet secured by DNSSEC. However, one should expect that more and more domains will implement this feature as it improves Internet security considerably. Until then DNSSEC Validator is a nice tool that helps you to observe when your favorite websites start jumping on the bandwagon.

Ouch. I've seen such a response by another 'friend' of mine. Anyway, from what I can tell (personal judgment here), Memory Fox isn't a tricky malware.
Based on my understanding, PrevX, Hitman Pro and other security software which have aggressive heuristics or may either be a HIPS or have HIPS-like component would 'detect' or 'alert' you of it due to it's nature of being an executable located at Firefox Profile Folder which tries to access the memory of other apps if you set it to "Memory Recovery For All Running Application Processes". If you un-check the option, it should abide by your setting (unless there's a bug). Just set your security software to allow,'trust', or ignore it.
I trust the developer...you can see his post here on MozillaZine (http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?f=38&t=1750895).
More info here: http://www.browsermemory.com/
Privacy Policy (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/53880/privacy/)
I would have used AFOM (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/11922/) ("the elder brother") from the same developer, IDEVFH (http://www.browsermemory.com/?page_id=207) but it's no longer supporting Firefox beyond V3.6. There's no point if anyone here is thinking of force-installing that by skipping compatibility check since it simply won't work even if you manage to get it installed.
I'm not trying to convince anyone it's 'malware-free' if you really think it isn't. Everyone is entitled to his/her opinion and I'm merely stating mine as it is.

Memory Fox is not malware. We believe you but mimic such actions, which make it look like malware. Prevx detects it as malware. I reported it as FP, but they might have more evidence about its malicious nature.

-{ Quote: "Be careful! It keeps on logging into an unknown server even if FF is shut down." }-
"Memory Fox" 5.2 continues to run after the exit of Firefox so as the global processes can be accessed for memory recovery and retention. If you've got the Event logging checked on from the Options dialog it will access the Windows Event server. I am waiting for Mozilla to mature the Gecko 2.0 so as I can rebuild "Memory Fox" under the XPCOM and "AFOM" as well.
My suggestion to any users would be that to determine any malicious intent on the part of "AFOM" or "Memory Fox" is to check the Inbound/Outbound of the TCP/IP connection with a packet sniffer to validate such claims.
Professional developers would without reservation spot improper activity for any such add-on hosting on AMO Mozilla.
Thanks for all of you that do use "Memory Fox" or "AFOM" for memory recovery !

I hope there's no circular logic involved but people over there do take issues raised seriously. There's also healthy competition among the maintainers of various lists. So there's good chance of a solution if one exists.

At the moment ABP is working fine on SeaMonkey (all computers, portables etc). However, I will look into this further. :thumb:

This add-on sends all the urls you visit for the first time to their server, although this make it faster than ABP on older computers or netbooks, I wouldn't trust it.
This effectively means they decide what to block, while with Element Hiding Helper add-on and subscription lists you decide what to block.

I don't get why or how the add-on can then be faster than ABP or Privoxy which both do the blocking "at home".

Yes, if a Search Engine keeps a log file with the user's IP, it is the end of the world....
All the sites people visit do the same, and all ISPs do the same.
So what? ???

Exactly, it doesn't bother me but judging by the number of "privacy" posts, it does bother a lot of people.
Now what about the other issue. Why or how will AdBan be quicker / more efficient than existing blockers?

Well, Search Engines don't see every single url you visit, or do they??
-{ Quote: "I don't get why or how the add-on can then be faster than ABP or Privoxy which both do the blocking "at home"." }-
This is how I understood it: When you browse a website for the first time after installing AdBan, the Ads which AdBan doesn't have a rule for yet will be displayed initially, but AdBan sends the urls on that page to their server, the server will respond with blocking rules for those particular urls. Next time you visit that page again (most of) the Ads will be blocked.
I haven't used it for long, I don't know if it caches the rules locally, but even if it does, the cache will be still smaller than ABP subscription rules, so fewer rules to check against.
The huge block list is on the server and only those needed will be used locally. You can also hit the 'Report ads' button if some ads aren't blocked so they can check the page and add the rules to their server. But as I said this means they decide what to block.

I use AdBlock Plus + Privoxy, sort of sharing the burden. With both, I'm in total control. I make my own filters and don't rely on "lists".
Let's see. Someone may come up with a convincing argument to use AdBan fully or in conjunction with some other blocker. I don't like to try out something new!

Sure do, but unfortunately it doesn't "take". I'm still left with the same, lonely, empty list. What's worse is that now, I'm left with NoScript doing the job, which litters the pages with NoScript boxes everywhere. Outside of re-installing the extension, or worse, FF itself, I'm not certain what to do. Given the recent developments, I'm not all that sure about ABP, period.

I think some of these recent Facebook appearances in things like extensions and *gag*..security apps (I'm looking straight at you, Avast), aren't intended as anything other than "getting the word out". However, what seems to be forgotten is that prior to the Facebook craze, well known software and extensions were still well known, and popular. It's bad taste to add this sort of thing to a security app. And, in regards to ABP, well, it's a privacy app of sorts, intended to block annoying ads that, often, track you. And you decide to put an ad..in an adblocker..for one of the biggest privacy threats on the net..that also tracks you? *sarcastic clap* Good show, good show.

I think you're looking for something like Vacuum Paces Improved (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/vacuum-places-improved/) or PlacesCleaner (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/placescleaner/). I had used them FF 3.6 but not in FF 4: If I install any of them FF 4 stalls as soon as I acesss the extension manager. I guess it's an incompatibility with one of my other extensions.
EDIT: And the culprit seems to be TabMixPlus. Unfortunately, I love this extensions, and there seems to be no real replacement ...

I noticed that FF4 includes sqlite3.exe. To save loading yet another add-on, you could run the following from a command prompt:
"<firefox path>\sqlite3" "<profile path>\places.sqlite" vacuum
Or vacuum the lot in one go:
for %a in (<profile path>\*.sqlite) do ("<firefox path>\sqlite3" %a vacuum)

Not exactly an extension but a small user style for the Stylish add-on that tweaks the Add-on Manager page:
Firefox 4 - Better Addons Manager (http://userstyles.org/styles/45754/firefox-4-better-addons-manager)
This in turn can be tweaked to change the background color for those who prefer darker pages.

The thread also mentions idle vacuuming of places.sqlite in Firefox 4, but that's just one of many .sqlite files that CCleaner can compact.

The only issue is (and I'm facing that issue with ABP being problematic at the moment for me), is that with NoScript, you're left with a lot of empty boxes on the page with the NoScript symbol inside them. It looks ugly. Also, NoScript will sometimes slow loading pages as well. A lot of those ad servers are persistent little buggers that try hard to load.

That list only refers to start-up. And I'm not sure whether that's a start-up after booting or what.
They don't talk about slowing down Fx during a browsing session as opposed to start-up. But, as you say, the time saved in not downloading blocked content should more than compensate.

I'm not sure if you noticed that that site measured the impact of these add-ons "on how long it takes Firefox to start up". This obviously doesn't mean that browsing becomes slower! In the case of AdblockPlus the opposite is true: As a lot of ads are not downloaded, many sites load much faster.

Palant has responded here (http://blog.mozilla.com/addons/2011/04/01/improving-add-on-performance/).
I don't use any ready-made list but those who do use one or more should be prepared for a slower start-up. In Palant's words:
-{ Quote: "Unfortunately, that’s most likely only because you were testing Adblock Plus without any filters. Even with all the caching done in the current Adblock Plus version, loading up EasyList with its 11 thousand filters is taking its time. Most of that time is taken up by Gecko’s parsing of the CSS file generated by Adblock Plus (200ms on my laptop in Minefield, it’s more than 700kB)." }-
The blog and the responses are worth a look!
Here's a response from one of the creators of one of the worst "offenders", Firebug:
-{ Quote: "
Firebug has 4000+ bug reports and 20,000+ newsgroup postings: without any doubt our user community is active in reporting issues. How many of those users complain about start up time?
Zero.
How much time to I plan to invest in improving Firebug startup time?

It's possible, but it's not the most easy-to-use tool for the job, I use HttpFox for that purpose.
But I use that feature to create my own blocklist, you'd be surprised by the number of tracking urls that aren't blocked by easylist and fanboy.
As for FlashGot(which was named on that thread), it's useful if you want to use a download manager, also it shows the size of video. And if you want it to have less impact on Fx startup, go to its options > Advanced > uncheck "Automatic download manager detection".

I don't think ABP can do a lot to change. It basically boils down to filters, and, human nature being what it is, more filters=better. EasyList has 11k and counting, and, as Sadeghi85 pointed out, ABP is still going to miss some. I doubt you can even filter out every single ad/tracker out there, as I doubt anyone knows just how many there are. If you add to the filters, you risk more performance loss, and you still miss things. If you subtract filters, you miss more, and worse, you risk upsetting your users. Either way, said users will just keep wanting you to add this and that to the filters.

-{ Quote: "Then there is the occasional website who will not deliver its contents if you are using certain filters; AdBlock being one I see the most." }-
You know, I've actually not run into any websites that have told me to allow ads or get lost for a long time. However, what I am running into under every browser so far that I've tested (FF4, IE 9, Chrome 11), is that the various ad-blockers under everything but Firefox, are killing page rendering. IE 9 rendering, after a few minutes of running smooth, just went down the tubes using TPLs from Fanboy (so far the only ad-blocking there really is for free in IE 9). Chrome 11 was doomed from the get-go, whether I used AdBlock for Chrome or even the "official" ABP that was forked over to Chrome. I even let them run outside of Sandboxie, as its newest version seems to slow those two browsers down as well, and no change.
I've tested, installed, reinstalled both browsers, and tested them for over a day, and the results have been the same. I'll sound like an FF fanboy, but truly in my case, Firefox performs the best out of the three with ad-blocking and just performs better period.
-Edit-
Hours after writing this post, I come into contact with a website that refuses to work with ABP. Live365 no longer allows you to listen with ABP, this seems to have changed overnight.

point on compression from the link: the way the extension is distributed is via a highly compressed .xpi file. In a non-rigorous study on Win7, compared to an totally uncompressed version, the highly compressed .xpi takes a bit more time whereas a minimally compressed .xpi is slightly better than the uncompressed.

I don't consider this a big problem. Yes, one should not use several filter list subscriptions that overlap (https://adblockplus.org/en/getting_started#subscription) to a large extent (like Easylist and Fanboy), but generally ABP has always been very fast, and the newer versions offer an even faster filter matching algorithm (https://adblockplus.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=6118&sid=9f9779b9e0e0cd4d5f5bee990a4bc370). (BTW: Wladimir had shown some time ago that filters using regular expressions are often slower than normal filters, and the major subscription lists have adapted since then.)
For the record, I'm using Easylist (with the supplement for my region) + EasyPrivacy, and I'm very happy with it.
BTW: The often very unsubstantiated rant against ABP has led to a very frustrated reaction (https://adblockplus.org/blog/taking-a-vacation-from-work-with-the-community) of Wladimir. Very sad.

Not really surprised. And, working with users is a genuine PITA sometimes. No matter how little they know about the subject matter and no matter how much you explain them the reason why they should do this or that, they tend to stubbornly insist on their ways of doing things.

ABP needs to load 11k :o filters from easylist for example. Isnt that a bit overkill? When i look at the matches it found, mostly 90% or more of the filters arent used while i surf my usual websites.
ABP is probably coded to work very fast but with such huge filter lists (and some paranoid guys use many lists at same time) its no wonder it slows down startup times of Firefox.

They used to be shorter in earlier times as they contained many complex regular expressions which are slower than simple filters, though - see here (http://adblockplus.org/en/deregifier) and here (http://adblockplus.org/en/faq_basics#regexps).

Very true, which is why people still have malware problems as well (though useability comes into play in security matters). It was a little pathetic to read where he offered to help out groups of people and they refused. Here's a bit of advice for people out there: If you're having issues, and the developer himself or herself contacts you, and offers to help you test the issues....do it you numbskull! There are enough devs out there who frankly don't give a damn and when you get one who does, jump on it.

I've found Fanboys lists to be more reliable myself. I use a handful of them and then just add my own as I go along. And, you're right, a good portion of those filters may never have one hit.

I use that list from fanboy too. I loaded a few hundred web-pages that i have and looked at the successful hits. I disabled the "zero" hits ones which were a lot. I'm not sure if the browsing is faster now, but i can imagine the CPU is reduced with this because it only needs to go trough a small list now.

Same ;D While it looks good on paper, life has taught me that the moment you get rid of something, thinking you won't ever need it, is the exact moment you'll need it.

Good news for all NoScript users:

Such comments would be more useful if the sites were mentioned. Otherwise, it could be misinterpreted for FUD.

One place that might have an issue with ad-blockers is PCWorld.com. If you go down their list of articles, and begin clicking the next pages, you may see what I see. After the second or third page of articles, the entire website is put in the background, and a blank, white pop-up appears with "Ok" and "Cancel". Pushing neither button takes what becomes a full page freeze away, nor can you get rid of the pop-up without leaving the site and coming back.
To give some insight into my set-up, I am using Firefox 4 with Fanboys ABP filters, and NoScript, with PCWorld allowed. Also Live365 will no longer work with ABP enabled either. It will load the website, but all streams are stuck in an endless loading attempt.
@InternetMeltDown: AdBlock is not a filter, but rather an extension into which filters such as Easylist and Fanboy are loaded.

If a site is Not properly displayed, then, an ABP user can
temporarily disable Only the particular Filter which is causing the trouble with the respective site.
There is No need to disable the entire ABP add-on.
By disabling one Filter at a time, it is easy to find which one is causing the trouble with the respective site.
When leaving the respective site, the ABP user will re-enable All Filters.
