I was wondering if others are using several defragmenters to "effectively" defragments their drives. Coz me I am just using one defragmenter to defrag my HD and that is PowerDefragmenter GUI (contig.exe) . ;) 8)

One should be all you need. I use O&O defrag, but the other well known ones such as Perfect Disk and Diskeeper are also very good, as is the one you're using.

Hi,
I use the built-in Windows Defragmenter, it does the job, I think.

i also just use the windows one. is there an advantage to using a separate one? or is using another degragger maybe for the people who are not running windows?

As I understand it, you should stick with just one defragger. They all use different algorithms to do the defragging, so each time that you change defraggers the previous one simply gets "undone" and is replaced with the new one. So your disk is not getting any more defragged; it is doing a lot of extra work for nothing. So whatever one you choose, just stick with it. :)

Me too, it does the best job the fastest of any I have seen. Stick with it.

I have experimented a little with using different defraggers.

O&O defrags space defragmentation is perfectly compatible with diskeepers default defrag method and also Mst Defrags default defrag.

Diskkeeper and the MS defragger should be compatible, because isn't it the Diskkeeper folks who designed the MS defragger? Sort of a stripped down version of DK, so it probably uses the same algorithms.

I use the defragmenter that comes with Windows.
I used Diskeeper for awhile and I liked the "Set it and Forget it" option, but I can't used that option anymore, because I'm planning to use ShadowUser.

Straight from the SUguide.pdf of ShadowStor
-{ Quote: "
Best Practices
ShadowStor Inc. recommends the following best practices to ensure the
best experience with ShadowUser:
1. Test ShadowUser Configuration Before Using
2. Use Wallpaper to Indicate When the System is in ShadowMode
3. Partition Hard Drive
We recommend you partition your hard drives using third party
partitioning software such as PartitionCommander™ and
PartitionMagic™. Creating partitions and separating your system partition from your data partitions gives you greater control over how you protect your system using ShadowUser.
4. Disable De-fragmentation Programs
We strongly recommend you disable any de-fragmentation programs such as Perfect Disk™ or Diskeeper™ while in ShadowMode. If you run a de-fragmentation program while in ShadowMode, ShadowUser will intercept these commands and disregard all de-fragmentation tasks.
Perform de-fragmentation in standard mode.

I've been using Contig from SysInternals for quite some time now. Not sure if it's "the best" but I have no complaints so far.

I use Rollback (http://www.rollbacksoftware.com/). Therefore, I no longer need to defrag. Neither do I need to fret & fume when I do dumb things. Rollback is grrrrrreat! It not only does a superb job of CYA, it also defrags to the zenith.

Same here, I was using PerfectDisk before and was very very happy with it but now Rollback take good care of my defragmentation :-)

Yes.

Perfect Disk, O& O Defrag and Diskeeper do a better job of defragging than the watered down built-in defragger.

And Perfect disk appears to be the best of the lot.
There are several papers at Perfect Disk's web site demonstrating how Perfect disk is better than certain other defraggers.

See http://www.raxco.com/

I finally bit the bullet and ordered Perfect Disk yesterday,

I use the trial version recently, it is really very good.

I might as well chime in: I have PerfectDisk installed on all four of mine and my family's PCs. It runs every Saturday morning.

Mrk" }-Same here. I've tried some of the others like Perfect Disk and, frankly, I think they are a waste of money. They, maybe, do a slightly better job. Nothing to write home about. Actually, Perfect Disk had a knack for doing something I didn't like, although I can't remember now exactly what that was. :(

I want to ask Window,s own defregmentre is not enough?
Also how often u should defragment the disk, can it cause any physical damagel wear off to the disk if u do it too often, esp if un-necessary.

Hello,
Every turn of the HDD causes its life cycle to go down. So if you have two or more HDDs, you gain life cycles.

Perfect disk user here and I go through a ritual with my defrags.

1.Shutdown all running apps-usually just ZAP and Sandboxie.

2.Open taskmanager and end explorer process.

3.Taskmanager-new task-run command to reset layout.ini file-"Rundll32.exe advapi32.dll,ProcessIdleTasks"

4.Taskmanager-new task-perfect disk.exe-smart placement defrag

5.Taskmanager-new task-explorer

And Bob's your uncle,am I a weirdo or what!!:)

I also use Perfect disk a whole lot less. I will actually defrag with it when I update my baseline, or if I have to uninstall it for some reason.

I'm only using one - PerfectDisk. Incidentally, I've not had to defrag for ages now - the recommendation has been 'None' each time I analyse the drive.

If I used Rollback Rx, I wouldn't use any as that program has its own built-in defragger.
