I want to know is there any free firewall that is very light on resources. Don,t want a complicated set up, just a simple one( can be used by a beginner) to replace windows firewall.

Most of the really light ones are rule based and therefore a little more complicated than the simple ones like ZA. Kerio 2, Jetico, Look N Stop, and so on are very light, but take some fiddling with to set up right. LnS might be the easiest of the rule based ones though.

So you mean
ZA-- simple but not light
Kerio, Jetco, LooknStop --- light but not simple.
Am I right?

Sorry, you are right. LnS is not free. Kerio 2 is free. Jetico is free. But both require some work on rules though. ZA is free and not too heavy really. So that might work for you.

Just read somewhere that after one month trial LcS still works as basic firewall. Only application monitor etc is lost. Have any idea?

iirc thats right. also with the limited version of LnS u cant use the enhanced ruleset, phant0ms works tho i think.

In firewalls, "light and simple" seldom go together. Light firewalls are rule based, you set it up. Simple firewalls generally use a form of automatic rule creation, which increases the size and demand on the system. It's not that hard to learn how firewall rules work. Kerio 2.1 5 is one of the lightest on the system. It does come with a good help file.

If you have ever used Zone Alarm, you would be able to use Kerio. It comes with a beginners mode, and an advanced mode. The latest version is free for all services for about 15 days, and if you don't pay the $US15 approx, then it reverts to a basic firewall.

I come from using ZA and Outpost, and find Kerio to be the best. Even in advanced mode it tells you what is going out and what is coming in; you just have to say yes or no. Most times you will know what to do.

I had used Kerio trial also for a short period. I used ZA pro for sometime and liked it. It was easy to use even for me. I want to ask, out of ZA free and Kerio free which one is better? Also what about LnS free basic firewall( that you can use after the trial is over)? I think I will like to choose one of these.

It is more a matter of which one is better for you. The one are you are most comfortable with and understand. If you want the ability for advanced application rules, then Kerio free offers this. You would need ZA Pro for advanced rules.

There is no application control, so if that is something you want it would not be your choice.

Thanks, then I think I will go for Kerio. I do like a little bit playing with application rules.

It's an easy firewall and at the moment it uses 15MB RAM on my system since yesterday. :)
I do have other measures in place to prevent this from happening, although
I'm also a bit sceptical about that review.

Not an expert on firewalls by a long shot, but IMO Kerio is a good firewall.
If you're willing to spend some money, you'll get this one pretty cheap. 8)

Why not try filseclab, it's light and needs virtually no configuring as it has around a 100 built in rules which you can tweak to get stealth at the Grc test site!

I am also very happy with filescab. It is very light on my old win98 machine and seems to do the job it was intended to do. Setup was very simple.

Sygate would also be a good choice. Even though it has been absorbed by big brother it will function as a very capable firewall for quite some time. And did I mention it is free, download a copy here: http: http://207.33.111.31/spf/

There has been much discussion here about Kerio's problem with some leakage, however, the concensus of opinion was that for the normal user this wasnt thought to be that much of a big deal. Kerio 2.1.5 is still a very good firewall and it is still free. I use it on one of my PC.s. without any problem.
for Kerio 2.1.5 Blitzenzeus rulesets see here....

When u install a trial it becomes free version( with some features disabled) after specified period( one month i think).

It actually passes more tests than norton even though norton has a higher ranking. Kerio just catches the leaktests PRIOR to network access(such as when they keylog, process inject, etc.), so Kerio only gets a 1/2 point for this. It still does its job and prevents them. The test results are a bit skewed because of this, so you have to look in depth in the chart for the bars, not only checks

Even then Kerio 13
Norton 19

Isn,t it?

Read the previous post a little more carefully since I already answered the question. Kerio prevents more leak tests than Norton, it just catches them with its "HIPS" capability so it only counts for half a point.
