As you say those things should, " ring a big fat red bell for every user. " Except of course they won't i have to say, because just as with the MS OS, most people even with Macs are not techy/security minded at all ! So your ave Jo is more likely than not to allow things in that some of us wouldn't.
But worse than that, most people using Macs believe they are totally safe from viruses etc, so don't even think in secure ways to start with. And as we are now beginning to see some of the coders appear to have begun a new campaign of, " Lets crack the Mac " © StevieO 2k6.

An excellent and clear analysis, and a perfect tool to make people understand that malware effects is a problem for a lot of platforms, although it usually hits far harder to win32 ones.
