It's much safer to set the kill bit of nasty active-x controls using an application specifically designed to do it, such as Spywareblaster. That way you can start off with a large list of know bad active-x IDs that have already been dealt with.
You can also add your own if needed, via the Spywareblaster interface, which is MUCH safer than editing the registry directly.

Some people do pause before even considering editing the registry.......an for the most part thats a good thing to do.........the registry is not a playground for the in-experienced......

On the other hand...there are people who prefer not to become dependant on third part software.......an have the experience to tweak the registry accordingly..

Common sense should advise a person of his ability in this matter.....a new or in-experienced person should not even consider touching the registry.....

Experience does eventually arrive....an the time comes when a person grows in knowledge. Such a person has no need for third part Programs to do what he can do.......thereby has no need for cluttering the harddrive with extra installs......( I do use spywareblaser myself).....

Being somewhat "old school" I tend to keep a slim harddrive whenever possible......the less installed the less infectable.........plus there are other reasons.......

But yes trickyricky....the use of a program such as spywareblaster would be safer.......if you know the correct information to enter.........

An in-experience person should use a program like spywareblaster......it would be highly suggestable....................

This is being placed here because there are those who for wnatever reason either dislike or have'nt the experience to tweak their registry.
Therefore this third party program may offer some assistence.......an may work as a compliment to Spywareblaster...........

ActiveX Compatibility Manager


ActiveX Compatibility Manager is a standalone executable, and it doesn't require any installation process or additional DLLs. In order to start using it, just copy the executable file (acm.exe) to any folder you like, and run it.
The main window of acm displays the list of all ActiveX components that are currently available for enabling/disabling. For components that are currently installed on your computer, additional information is also displayed: product name, company name, description, version, filename, and more...

ActiveX Compatibility Manager ..........decided to take it for a test run..........so far working alright..........but was in for a real surprise that may be of interest to others.........


M$ VIRTUAL MACHINE.........sun java is installed......M$ virtual machine
was "dis-abled" in internet explorer................but lo and behold....activeX Compatibility Manager reveal THAT M$ VIRTUAL MACHINE WAS IN FACT STILL VERY MUCH>>>>>"ENABLED"

now thats the cat's meow.......

Have now "dis-abled M$ virtual machine using activeX compatibility manager........an came here and elsewhere on the internet......testing to see if all is will........so far so good......

So, if M$ Virtual Machine was not dis-abled as previously thought......was that a security risk......after all....most of us installed sun java to get away from M$ Virtual Machine......but we didn't really cause it remains enabled after installing sun java.......


Any thoughts to be shared on this subject ?????

Thanks guys for the replies.......no, I reallly don't want to remove VM at this particular time..........it was just something of a wake-up call to see VM enable although it was suppose to be disable.........an though how this could possibly be exploit.........

Most likely a few million people are of the idea that they have disabled VM.......an they really have not.......

Decided to remove M$ virtual machine........should have did it a long time ago but the computer was not being used......an just kept putting off removing VM


To those considering the same thing.....it took under 10 minutes to remove........easy as eating apple pie.
