This appears normal on an XP system. Try McAfee, BitDefender or AVK for high real-time memory usage!!!
You must have a very old computer to worry about this amount of memory usage. On most systems, Amon runs as light as a feather and does not affect system performance.
Don't forget that memory usage depends upon the OS used and even a relatively high usage will not mean an impact on system responsiveness.
Further, memory usage does not always reflect on system responsiveness. On my systems, F-Prot for Windows which uses only 2MB VM impacts more in real time than KAV/NOD/Dr Web/Command/VBA32!!!
If you have at least 256/512MB RAM on an XP system, AMON will be a lightweight Real-Time Monitor and even on much lower memory systems AMON will potentially run without any problems.

Take a look at a recent thread here. (http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=114182&highlight=memory+usage)
