Web Filters....

What are they exactly and could I use one? I have curantly AVG Free , Spyware Blaster 3.5.1 and ZA Free and Spybot S&D with Tea-Timer on. I've heard of this before but since I'm such a novice to half of what people are talking about on here I thought I'd ask. Thanks.

what do u mean by web filter? do u mean sometime like cybernanny thats a parental filter or proxomitron which in itself can do many things from change the way sites look and act to just block ads or flash.

web filters are as they sound - they filter content from pages before they load into your browser. some filter porn and certain "bad" sites, others block popups or active scripting - anything they're programmed to do. i use Proxomitron to filter content, it's a great program. i think without it i would spend most of my time on the internet crying for help to get rid of viruses/ spyware.

There are numerous "web filters"........to give you an understanding.....consider using a "HOSTS" file......nothing to install...just place the "HOSTS FILE" in the proper place an BANG....you filtered websites.........

As mentioned there are programs such as "PROXO"......Webwasher....and several others that really are local proxies that filter content...etc

It takes absolutely no experience to use a Webfilter and very little knowledge......novice or not...sure, you can use one...or several........so go for it!!

well all of this really depends on what you define "web filtering" as. some AV's have web filters, but usually web filters are an extension offered my other programs (like antimalware suites or antispyware programs). also, HOSTS files do work quite effectively, although i think spywareblaster and spybot's immunization aren't too bad for your basics. oh, and if you're looking for an example of an AV that has web filtering/web scanning, then one of them is probably avast! (has web shield that scans all incoming http traffic).

For filtering ads, Admuncher is the best.

For filtering content like violence and nudity, Cybersitter is supposed to be good.

You could also take a look at netveda firewall whic is also free. That gives you web filtering which you can fine tune to your individual liking and is light on the system.

Also Snowies idea of using mvps HOST file is great. Be sure to lock the host file ZoneAlarm does that job very well also.
