For those interested: here's a copy and paste from (the relevant part of) an email from Grisoft, announcing AVG Free edition will be available for all, regardless where they reside:

-{ Quote: "I´d like to explain some facts about AVG Free Edition in Europe.

Two years ago we put AVG Free edition on the "out_of _European" market. We had signed distribution agreements with some European partners, before, and
that was the main reason we´ve set AVG Free for world outside of Europe.

Now, the situation has changed, and, we are able to provide AVG Free in English localization for European users. We are going to change AVG Free Edition license agreement and general conditions on the website, in a short time.

Good news. :) Maybe they made it because the german edition of AVG is now sold under a different brand name (Databecker Anti Virus).

Any news about the free version for non-UK European users? The website still doesn't mention it...

I've just installed it on my machine (XPhome), no problem. I didn't give it many permissions though - I'm just going to use it as a back up secondary scanner. Norton is my main always on jobbie.
