I was going through the security podcasts on iTunes, and this was one of the ones I was most impressed with, very reasonable and down to earth.
Check out the podcast on the Symantec ordeal with their supposed rootkit.

Going to download this one on this recommendation.
I started listening to Steve Gibson's full set of podcasts and although I know there are some questionable points raised I have really enjoyed them with the bonus they have me think about other aspects of security.
I did get a bit lost in his cryptograhic ones but enjoyed the firewalls etc

I downloaded all of them and have now caught up waiting for the next episode this week - Q&A's which are good.
It is really good to know there is another security podcast to follow now as I am never too sure about just downloading out of a selection.

Thanks for this advice going to itunes soon and then to my ipod.

i've listened to it abit. i don't understand why the feed is called "some rights reserved" ??? i think at one time it was even called this ' in the feed lol

Sounds like an error on your end, iceni, I've never seen it labeled anything but "The Security Catalyst".. but who really cares about that anyway?

it's not at my end lol, it the dodgy software he's using to make the xml tags :)

ok, it might be privoxy. here's the xml, can someone have a look at it, there's a bit which says 'some rights reserved' if you search it, but it has too many tags near it for me to tell what's going on :-[ plus i really don't know what's going on anyway ::)

I was listening to the last episode of Steve Gibson's podcasts - I really did like these at the beginning but as I progressed throught with an open mind I certainly saw the 'way out excuse when a question was raised by a listener about something stated in a previous cast. Whilst there was a lot to make me think and learn I know I have learned the same as you have stated about taking Steve seriously....a friend had told me the very same thing ;)

I put SecurityCatalyst into itunes and got a bit confused - first time I found a section with a *lot* of podcasts about security & last night when I was collecting SG's I found Catalyst with approx 6 episodes - I left them hoping to ask on the forum again how many are in the set for SC?
I definitely want to listen as I really do enjoy the security ones but will need to check again as to which ones are the correct ones ???

Edit: I think the shorter list is the one and not the first that itunes found for me - will check this as I found the icon on the link.

....err, ok.. well it was like that, but now I start up iTunes and the list is long again, including episodes back to Dec 2005, so I don't know what's going on. It must be something with iTunes. If you can get the one from Jan 15th about the Norton rootkit, that would be a great one to start with just because you could get a good idea of how SC contrasts with others. If you can't, and you do want to hear it, I can put it up on my webspace for you to download.

Thanks Notok good to have the date I should start at. I had to go offline last night without any podcasts downloaded but will endeavour to get them today - will try asap and post back to let you know what if I can get the correct ones, thanks for the offer of uploading the Norton one :) off to look soon.

Edit: I have found the list by clicking a few arrows in itunes and am currently downloading from Dec 2005 - will update ipod later and will be listening over the next few evenings/early mornings ;)

Hi Notok

Listened to my first few Catalyst podcasts - 2 last night and one early this morning.
Thank you for recommending them as I have enjoyed WMF (2) and also the Symantec one. I must say although they are business orientated & I am just a home user the chat is cool and fast and very enjoyable, in fact answered some of the questions I would have asked myself 8) more to the point the answers were clear and refreshing plus I liked the way he compared situations to real life. Even though I don't know about the US health service etc I still found the comparisons (as we say in NI) 'down to earth' ;)

I have all the others still to listen to & know if they continue as they started I will be adding as each episode is issued. Thye are a lot less 'strained' than 'Security Now' I felt in ways Steve got me confused (with complexities) more plus he didn't like to admit he had made a mistake when a listener asked a question after the cast.
The Catalyst ones are definitely just that - a catalyst to get even a home user thinking and looking forward to the next session - thank you for posting about these :)

The business stuff is what I like about it, because it gives you a good and rounded perspective of security as a whole, something we don't always get around here :) I also agree about the point of not being "strained", and that's a good word for it that I hadn't considered before. SC definitely conveys a lot more natural understanding. I've always said that if you can't bring it down to layman's terms, you probably don't understand it that well (although there's always exceptions).

Anyway, I'm very glad you liked it.. SC got me hooked, and I think it's a cast all can benefit from, regardless of skill level :)

It is great to be looking forward to the listening to the next ones.
I do love the way he talked about policies/patches and associated them to the business scenario
I would recommend them to anyone as you have done :) they are not boring and really do help all levels. I feel he has taken the 'do not tread here as you don't know what security is....' out of the equation and as my mind thinking of the associations/comparisons in reality.

I must go to the website and read more after listening now. Hopefully they casts will continue to be issued as I will be downloading SC for sure now.
