Hello Everyone: I have Spyware Blaster, and Spyguard on my pc already, but i also have this "winnet.exe" on my pc, HP said it may be some kind of spyware. So i deleted it from the Registry and it is back again, only this time its in my registry twice! Anyone know what this is, please dont confuse this with the "Wininit.exe, i know that is legit! Any idea's? Thanks, Tom

Hi tomteeth,

Winnet.exe could indicate:
http://www.doxdesk.com/parasite/CommonName.html

Could you post your HijackThis log (http://www.tomcoyote.org/hjt/)
Download, Unzip and run HijackThis, Then click Scan > Save log, save the log as a .txt file and copy & paste its content into your next post.
Don´t fix anything yet. Most of what it finds is harmless.

Regards,

Pieter

Hi tomteeth,

Check the following items in HijackThis.
Close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page=http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/ie/defaults/sp/ymsgr/*http://www.yahoo.com
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page=http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/ie/defaults/stp/ymsgr*http://my.yahoo.com
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar=http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/ie/defaults/sb/ymsgr/*http://www.yahoo.com/ext/search/search.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default)=http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/ie/defaults/su/ymsgr/*http://www.yahoo.com

Reboot after doing so.

I don't see any sign of CommonName.
Could you download the latest version of HijackThis (1.95) which also lists the running processes and post another log?
You can follow the link in my previous post.

Pieter

The Yahoo search engine hijack is a minor inconvenience.

It all depends where in the registry you found it.

If you did a Find Files for it, it will already be in there, and it will be a completely harmless MRU registry entry, and nothing to do with the Winnet.exe file itself.

I found this in my Documents, it says>>> "Winnet" shortcut to MS-DOS Program 3kb! Know what this could be?

Removing the old hijackthis.exe is sufficient.

Take a look at Tony´s answer. Where you found the references in the registry is important.
Indeed, the more searches you do for it, the more often you will find it. ;)

Let's just establish if it is running on your system, which is the only way in which it could harm you.

Pieter

Hi Tom,

No, that link in your documents doesn't ring any bells. And I have installed and removed CommonName numerous times.
Seeing your HijackThis log version 1.95 will reveal if CommonName is actually active. (which I doubt)

Pieter

Here is the Log from the new version of hijack this, but i think the entries in registry could just be from typing it in, so i deleted them but the main winnet.exe still shows up in my Documents!>>> Logfile of HijackThis v1.95.1

I can only repeat, with the addition of disabling SpywareGuard when you click Fix checked.
Check the following items in HijackThis.
Close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page=http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/ie/defaults/sp/ymsgr/*http://www.yahoo.com
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page=http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/ie/defaults/stp/ymsgr*http://my.yahoo.com
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar=http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/ie/defaults/sb/ymsgr/*http://www.yahoo.com/ext/search/search.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default)=http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/ie/defaults/su/ymsgr/*http://www.yahoo.com

Reboot after doing so.

Put that link you found in the trashcan if you don't know where it came from. Keep it there for a while, just in case problems arise and you should be fine.

Pieter
