Ever since I discovered DropToCD I have no need for bloated resource hog nero. Others I know feel the same way about nero but choose Prassi's ONES instead.

Here is discussing about Nero 7, not other burning software related stuff.

I had installed a OEM version 7 from my cd-drive 's retail cd,
and got some errors...so why uninstalled it,
downloaded Ahead 's cleaning tool and ran it,
also manually deleted whatever was left over the registry.
Just went back to Nero 6.3-always played nice in my machine.
I believe there's no need of having all these "features" in a cd-burning app,
sometimes i even get a feeling that my old 5.8 version ran more smoothly...
But I personally cannot clarify such a hard accusation, that it is rubbish,
'cause i didn't spend any of my time to see if it was something fixable...
My point-of-view,is pretty much described by these very-well known phrases:
"If it ain't broken, then don't fix it" and "KISS".
Tweak it,as much as your heart tells you to do,but if it's really broken,
don't try to "fix" it,just replace it-this 'causes much less of frustration.

So, it is a bug? Or it is compatibility problem? I have no problem using Nero 7 with my Liteon Combo Drive.
Or it is about empty CD problem? Maybe in Nero 7, they block burning pirated CD and other, i'm not sure also.
Thanks sowhat for posting his problem, maybe his problem can help me find more information about Nero 7 bugs, because i'm always emailing Nero official, and hope they can fix all these problem.

Yeah, I got Nero 7 and it did have a few problems, so I downloaded their MASSIVE 100GB bug fix which is what you have to do everytime you want the latest fixes. Unfrigginreal why can't they just have a small download for the updates? Why make us do some massive download just for a few little updates? Doesn't make sense to me. ??? I should have waited and looked for something better.

I think you are wrong, their small update is 100MB not GB, and their trial version is 400MB depend on the language you selected.

Ok ok, doesn't matter got error or not, please include your system which are running while burn a CD or DVD.
For me, I got burning failed when enable ZoneAlarm Antivirus and Spyware, after i disable these two, burning is successfull. But my friend, he already try Nero 7 from first release to latest version, no problem at all, and he say he never install any AntiVirus on his computer, does this means AV problem to cause Nero 7 burning failed?
And one thing I must tell you all, when burning a CD or DVD, it is better don't run or load any application while burning is in progress, its sometime can cause burning failed, especially for those who have low capacity of Random Access Memory(RAM).

The last poster brought up an interesting point. Next time nero is burning, pull up taskmanager & see the system resources it's hogging. Then if you want to see the difference install Prassi's ONES or Sateira's DropToCD & compare by burning the same project. Give each program a even playing field. A fresh reboot & same background processes. Most likely as I have found nero will be using up to 10x more resources. Most of that RAM.:o

I liked Nero back in the day and it's still pretty good. I stopped using it because it has more stuff than I use and the extras end up being wasted space. I didn't really need anything but the basic buring engine.

I recently switched to Ashampoo's Burning Studio (http://www.ashampoo.com/frontend/products/php/product.php?session_langid=2&idstring=0510) since it does everything that I used to do with Nero. It doesen't add anything to autorun when your computer starts and it's only about a 6Mb download. Of course like anything from Ashampoo, it's simple to use. The flip side of that is that you don't get much for advanced control, but I'd recommend it for the casual user.

se7engreen: Nero 7 contain these program:-
1) Nero Home
2) Nero Scout
3) Nero StartSmart 3
4) Nero Burning ROM 7
5) Nero Express 7
6) Nero WaveEditor 3
7) Nero SoundTrax 2
8 ) Nero Vision 4
9) Nero Recode 2
10) Nero ShowTime 2
11) Nero MediaHome
12) Nero PhotoSnap
13) Nero CoverDesigner 2
14) Nero ToolKit
15) Nero BackItUp 2
16) InCD 5
17) Nero SoundBox
18 ) Nero ImageDrive
You still can select custom installation, then you don't need to waste your space. You can just install Nero Burning Rom 7, because Nero Burning Rom is provide burning CD or DVD.

zapjb: As you say Nero use ten times more resource? it is because, example, sometimes when you burn a video file(MPG, AVI and other), Nero will check for compatibility VCD or DVD compliant, if the file that is not compliant with VCD or DVD, Nero will convert the video file to VCD compliant, then store in the temporary drive, then burn the converted file to CD or DVD. For other burning software, some of them not provide checking CD or DVD compliant, But most of them didn't provide this function.

also nero can use some system memory as a buffer, if u wish u can into ur option and lower the amount.

Nero Burning ROM and Nero Express will automatically create a log file at the end of every write attempt. (The log file will be created even if the burning process has failed).

The default folder where this log file is saved depends on whether you were using Nero Burning ROM or NeroExpress.
For -> Nero Burning ROM: C:\Programs\Ahead\Nero
For -> NeroExpress: C:\Programs\Ahead\NeroExpress

The name of this log file is
NeroHistory.log

The ten last burning processes are saved in this log file.
If possible, please specify the date and the time of the burning process in question so I and Nero can examine it specifically.

Please attach the log here, thanks...

I've heard of issues with 7 but as i have no problems with 5.5 feel no need or desire to "upgrade".

When i burn i've found it always works much more smoothly shutting everything down with msconfig etc, physically disconnecting from the internet first of course. This way i rarely if ever have any bad burns or faults.

I know nero has an AV capability built in which can scan for viruses before burning, so i wonder if this could be the cause of some of those errors with other AV's etc ?

Yes, Nero AV with other AV can cause burning failed.
Currently Nero 7 still not as stable as you all think, they always try to solve the problem when someone is try to send out the LOG to them. Maybe you all can try use Nero 6, which very stable. May you all use Nero 7 in future when its already stable.

My Benq DVD/CD-writer was delivered with a CD, that contains Nero 6 OEM.
I already use it a few times for different things and it works properly.
I could upgrade it to version 6.6.1.4 via Nero website.
I wasn't planning to use Nero, but it's a given horse. :)

Haven't tried Nero 7. Did try an older version some time ago but didn't like it. Been using BurnAtOnce (http://www.burnatonce.com/index.htm?news) since. Besides being much less bloated, it's free, Open Source. Been using it for both music and data with excellent results. The GUI is quite plain but works well. So far, it hasn't burned a single coaster for me. If I'm seeing it right, it will also burn DVDs (http://www.burnatonce.com/index.htm?http://www.burnatonce.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=696) when used with ProDVD.

That's my favorite program as well. It is especially good at ripping disks since it reads in RAW, so it comes in handy for me copying my games so I don't destroy the original cd on accident than have no game to play (those are in a shelf in my close, away from all destructive objects, hopefully :-\ ;) )

I also like deepburner, which works very well, and has a portable version.
