Running scan in safe mode on my XP, I could not see the close X on Top right, even when I moved the window to the left, the X did not display . But Alt and F4 to close the window can be used if required on your PC
FYI Only

Is running the scan in safe mode the recommended procedure? I've been doing it in start-up mode.

You generally only need to scan in safe mode if you think you may be infected , or if you are attempting to clean an infected machine. Routine scans are usually done in normal mode.
You can find out about safe mode here:-
