Is Java really necessary?

Hello,

I am a average home user who plays online games and have an antivirus, anti spyware, a registry fixer and some other programs... Do casual web surfing. Just wondering, do I really need Java from Sun on my system or how would I know when I will?

It's one of the free plug-ins of Firefox browser... I have it and I think you also need it coz some websites in the net needs Java application to functions e.g. moving demo pictures presentation. ;)
