AVP/KAV and issues

Hi. Just thought I'd share my recent experiences with everyone, and maybe get some kind of useful feedback.
I was using F-Secure for about 6 months because it had a good reputation and incorporated AVP, F-Prot, and another lesser known AV. I assumed that it was able to utilise AVP and F-Prot to their usual extent. It would seem that is not so. I downloaded a copy of Tron.exe zipped and manually scanned it with F-Secure. Nothing. I unzipped it. Scanned the exe. Nothing. Yes the bases were up to date. I also notice that F-Secure didn't seem to do so good on some of the comparison tests so I decided to go back to KAV.
I downloaded and installed KAV 3.6 first and had trouble with it unloading itself after it started up. Also had some other minor problems. I have Win2K SP2.
I then tried the newest version KAV 4.0.6. Looked ok but found out it was really slow. When I opened my file manager, it took forever, unless I disabled monitoring packed files. Also it slowed down my surfing tremendously. Took forever to shut the computer down too.
So. I ended up going back to version 3.5.133.0. It is working great. It is fast and stable. Also catches tron.zip as soon as I highlight it. That and all the other virises and trojans I have in my library.
Here's the question part. Has anybody found a later version that is fast and stable? Anybody know if there is anything to the newer versions that make them better than the older version, or is it just bells and whistles?
I fear that Kaspersky has made a big mistake in trying to make their AV compatible with that POS XP. Instead of coming up with a seperate version for XP because it is so different, they chose to stick with one version, and that was wrong.
So, I want to stick with Kaspersky simply because it does such a great job of catching both viruses and trojans. I would like to have a newer version that worked well though and I wonder if anyone has any insight on this.

If you have problems with KAV why not ask their support? BTW I have no problems with KAV 4.0.5 two Win2000 computers.

BTW: AVP.ch still offers the old 3.5 version which works perfectly when you install it without the control center part.

Email me and I will give you some very general ideas of how one finds such stuff. It is dangerous for people to be telling other people how to access programs that were written to compromise other peoples privacy.
Wizard, I sent an email to Kaspersky about the slowness of their version 4 series and never received a reply. I noticed they put out patches for a couple of the problems, but I am not going to play the patch game for my AV.
I have the 3.5 version and it does work well without the CC. I just wish I could get a newer version that I could use. I can tolerate the slow opening of Power Desk with the version 4, but the slow surfing is intolerable. I'm on 56k and it kills me.

KAV 4xx is not working properly on XP. Kaspersky Lab says that KAV 4 is made for XP... They are not there yet... Those symptoms are all the same for everyone, Root. It slowed down my computer which is P4 1.8 Ghz.

Use 3.5 swiss edition and you will be fine. The main thing, core engine files unpackers and signs are all the same for any of 3xx-4xx kaspersky versions.

Little update here.
Since AVP email checker does not work directly with Poco email, I have been using M@ildefense to watch Poco.
I just got an email with Klez-H as an attachment and M@ildefense promptly renamed it .safe and quarantined it is its quarantine folder, at which time AVP promptly jumped on it and said I had Klez-H in install.exe.safe in the quaranteen folder.
Nice to see protection in action. Makes all the work worth while.
By the way, this is the first bad guy I have ever received in my email. This sucker must be prolific. :o

Is there a reason you no like Noton antivirus?
Ther is no problem with XP and Are you sure Norton doesn't do a better job of fixing the infected files if it can? All the other software makers take their hint from Norton. Norton had the quarantine before all the others.
I still think it's e-mail protection is unsurpassed.
Yes you do have to pay a 5 dollar yearly fee for updates but heck, by then you are ready to buy the nnewest-coolest version anyway ;-)

I must agree too,I have given long trials to many av's but I find myself going back to Norton again.
I never notice any impact on resources either *(AMD750 451meg ram) And its never once let me down yet (touches lots of wooden furniture)

Hi controller and Tinribs. Yes there are several reasons I don't like Nortons. I'm not an antivirus expert (not a firewall expert, either, ha), so let me just say that I used to use Norton and Symantec products like most other people. Loved Norton products for a long time.
I got away from Norton when it started bloating its products to immmense proportions for no apparent *reason, other than to charge more money. Just as one example of Nortons handy work, take their acquisition of @guard firewall. They took a great product, bloated it in size beyond belief, took away one of its best features, made no improvement to the product itself and started charging an exorbitant price for it. They should be jailed for what they did to that product. Its obscene.
As for their AV products, they have so many, I wouldn't know which to buy. Also there seems to be a great deal of difference in how well one version may work as compared to another.
I also have had to cleanup after Norton using AVP to catch what Norton has missed on several different machines. Just some personal experience.
Nortons email checker seems to cause problems with several different programs and NIS and NAV both have been the source of problems for many people with issues like BSODs, shutdown problems, firewall problems, etc.
I could list more, but I think you get the idea. I like AVP/KAV because they work and work well. They do have some issues that need to be addressed too though.
I know other people have a different opinion of Norton and have very little problems with them. I'm happy for them. I urge people that have the opinion that Norton has never let them down to consider one thing though.
I can tell you personally and I have had others tell me that on different machines over various periods of time, with updated Norton AVs running resident, it is not unusual to run KAV or NOD32 and catch bad boys that Nortons has missed.
I hope I have not offended or angered anyone. I am only sharing my experience and please believe me I am not stretching the truth nor misleading in any way.
So - that's why I don't like Norton. Who knows? maybe a year from now, I won't like Kaspersky. *:D

I dont understand why anyone would want to run a pc with much less!!
Its not like its expensive, I bought a 256 stick a couple of months ago for £18 so its not like it breaks the bank,and the way most programmes and games are going you'd be mad to try to run most things with less than 256 without some problems.

I tried Kaspesky Lite the other day (it was free on a disc) and believe it or not Kaspersky used MORE system resources than a full Norton 2002 instal,I swear.

Hundreds of reasons. I do not recommand any Symantec software. Too many bad experience in the past. The only thing Symantec does better than other av companies is marketing. Just read your posting once again and you will find out what I mean. ;)
