I am just wondering that maybe the results of this poll is probably different from the poll I made on about those using firewalls. ::)
Tell me honestly, what is the main anti-virus program are you using... FREE version or PAID version? ???
If you ask me, I am using the free version of Avast! Home Edition Anti-virus.

Paid for NIS 2006 of which NAV is a component. Permit me to add my little rant that I think the subscription renewals are getting ridiculous for AV products, I know it is cheaper to wait and get the whole Suite of the new product {of NIS or NSW, or both}, including rebates, than it is to get a subscription renewal of an old product. That is not a commentary on Symantec, I think they all are getting too high; I know Panda's is quite high, and I suspect the others too. :-[

Paid:
NAV 2006 on one of my laptops
Avast! Pro on my main XP Pro x64 laptop
Mcafee 9 on my wifes PC
Mcafee 9 on my daughters PC
Overall Avast has worked really well on my main machine for me and no problems at all. I bought the Pro over the free home because I wanted the script blocker and also to support the company.
Mcafee is ok but a few things I feel are pretty poor are the activeX popup windows and having to log in to their web site with user name and password for updates. I also am a bit puzzled as to why their antivirus does not have a log.
Nav 2006 is actually pretty impressive over previous versions. Much improved, excellent test results and overall much less of a hog than earlier versions.

I also bought NIS 2006 recently via the Symantec store and got what I thought was a decent deal. For $69.99 no tax or shipping (digital download) I got NIS 2006 with 2 years of updates. So that works out to only $34.99 per year. For that I felt it was pretty good. I am thinking about replacing my wife's Mcafee 9 with this same deal and than for 2 years no worries about renewals. Also I am not sure about this as I read some various threads on it and the Symantec web site really does not give much details on anything, but with the 2 year subscription deal starting with this 2006 release, I have read that you not only get defs but also program updates. Again I do not know if this is accurate but if it is than it is an even better deal than I thought.

Paid for both KAV(resident) and NOD32(on-demand).
KAV was £19($32) and NOD was £16($27) for renewal. I don't think that is extortionate. It's not even £2 a month. Now if this was the price for HIPS application renewal then yeah, not happy. But AV's are being updated daily, sometime multiple times a day. But HIPS application's usually only get updated a few times a year. You are paying for the service, in which you are getting 24/7 support. I mean £19 for a year for KAV and how many times do they update in a year? Probably in excess of 1000 updates. Not 1000 signatures, 1000 times that you can download an update, with each update containing anything from 1 to xxx signatures. That's a lot of service for just £19.

Well, it's actually one of my "principles (http://users.volja.net/tayiper/principles.html)" that I prefer the free alternatives to bloated programs like for instance Symantec; and in fact I've never understood what Pro versions of AV programs offer (compare to free ones) that's really worth paying for them.
/EDIT: For the main reasons why I use the AntiVir (http://www.free-av.com) program and prefer it over others, please see the My thoughts about AntiVir vs. other anti-virus programs (http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?p=611926) thread that I opened back then here at Wilders Security forums ...

used to have AVG free (i know, dont laugh!)
then dumped AVG and got a licence for nod32, when that almost-expired, got a licence for KIS6 (Kaspersky)... porbabily gonna stick with it... happy with the product, never called up CS thou... probabily because i dont need to with KIS! ;D
i usualy follow the good old phrase "you pay monkeys, you get peanuts"... the free ones are sooo not as good as some of the ones you pay for, and for such a cheap price, its well worth buying a AV licence!

Yep, I am using it for that purpose here. Just do a custom install and don't install the realtime compoments. Then there is an option that kaspersky won't start on start up. After doing a scan, just right-click the K in the systray and exit it.

That didn't work. I have NOD32 installed & RTM. When I loaded KAV6 & followed your instructions. KAV6 notified me that I had to uninstall NOD32 to continue. So probably if I install KAV6 1st it'd work. But I don't feel like uninstalling NOD32.
But your instructions worked with KAV5. Except I had to disable KAV5 startup using an external program (RegSeeker). The option not to startup with WINDOWS didn't work within KAV5.

yeh, KAV6's a little annoying like that. you have to remove nod32, install KAV6 and then install NOD32 after. if i was you, i'l get KAV6.. although signatures are the same, KAV6's much more advanced!

KAV paid . KAV seems to be one of the fastest responders to new threats .
Antivir free on demand scanner . It don't find as much as KAV but does seem to have a slightly broader spectrum of detected malware .
AVG free on demand scanner . I keep it to determine what it misses and then send in the samples . Other than that I don't use it for anything .
Solo free on demand scanner . Same as AVG .

No doubt, free AVs are good, but some paid AVs are better than the free ones IMO... theres only 4 AVs which I'l be willing to pay for, if they didnt exist, I would switch to the free ones instead of using other paid AVs.
Personal opinion, I think the additional security is worth paying for, but many rather stick with the free, up to them. The free ones are decent still

Hi Dawgg,
I would also pay for better security, and use KAV6 on my desktop, but with the detection rates of Avira which are better than almost all paid AVs, I really do not see how I am getting additional security. I am not using a suite.
