Couldn't agree with you more about Opera, of which I'm a big fan also.

I''ve recently been testing Kmeleon as an other alternative browser, and I must say that I've never seen any browser as quick and low-on-resources as that lizard, not even Phoenix. Even Opera seems suddenly so sslloooww in comparison !!!

If you'd like to give it a try and report on your experience with this browser, I'd be glad to read from you (and any other Kmeleon user, for that matter).

The security parameters you can easily configure under the 'EDIT' menu, next selecting the 'PREFERENCES' option.

i have kmeleon on my pc.. rarely use it though. doesn't seem like anything compared with opera when u talk about speed.., but it is small an light.. it is based on the gecko, like mozilla firebird. i'm on gprs internet connection and opera outperforms others vastly, it's like broadband compared to ie&others
i'd say commercial av's outperform free ones in most critical aspects: detection, updates and most importantly support.. which free av updates daily? like kav, f-secure etc, which one has phone support? and at's, there is no good free at's anymore

I am also an Opera user but haven't run across the "symbiotic" loader. I would would really appreciate a reference to where I could locate it. Thanks

If I could find a browser that was faster than Opera, AND, I could customize it like I can Opera, then I might switch.
I downloaded Mozilla 1.4 and like it, but I can't customise the menu popups to add close tab or close window like I can in Opera. I have become really spoilled by Operas features.
I will say Mozilla is a good backup for Opera where I want activex available, and I did notice that it will render some pages better that Opera.
Any chance that any other browsers like KMellon allow you to customize menus, toolbars, etc?

Not sure what you're referring to.

My OS is a 98Lite version ( www.litepc.com ) of W98SE.
But are you saying there's a browser named Lite98 ?!

Not sure what you mean by customizing menus and toolbars, so I couldn't tell.

Also, I can't see any possibility to use active-x technology with the default options, but there must be some plug-in available I would guess. More info can probably be found at http://kmeleon.sourceforge.net

I'd like you to try it, just for fun and for getting your precious advice since you could then compare it with Opera and Mozilla...

Yes... Very fast and much more stable/reliable than the 'primary' 98SE.

KMeleon comes with a loader that preloads to save few seconds when KM starts - this is a Moz thing, some people use loader in starup group, others don't(their PCs have new CPUs + 256MB+ RAM).

I am totally disappointed in new Opera versions 6x & 7x- the best stable versions I use today are 3.62(JRE 1.4 ? No) and 5.12 (JRE 1.4 support- No). I think as both these versions not packed with UPX/similar schemes like 6x and 7x are, they interfere less with AVs like KAV etc.

I use these old browsers with both Java and JScript disabled to surf - & I still find Kmeleon as fast/faster than these 2 old Opera versions.

There are getting to be new browsers introduced nearly every week now. Most rely on the IE or Gecko engines. Many of them offer special options and functions that may interest some, but I haven't seen very many that really appeal to me.
Except for cookie problems in Opera7.20B1, all the Opera versions since version 6 have performed great for me. I am very happy with Opera 7.11.
I'll probably just stick with it.
