View Full Version : Backup for local (on-disk) backups

The Usual Suspect

I used to use GoBack 3.0.... then my HD failed and I forgot about it [the recovery guys at the Seagate repair centre decided to destroy all data, just to be be safe]

I had a license for Acronis TI 8... but I never needed to make a recovery from it.

I have an 'extra' 20GB samsung drive [samsung is most reliable IMO... seen Seagate fail twice on my system, maxtor has many stories in my circle too].

Now, the deal is, I'd like a software that does incremental backups like Ghost, but
1> Backs up to one of the two hard drives installed
2> on a schedule that I provide, so that HD activity makes some sense
3> doesn't mind defragmentation AT ALL
4> allows partial restoration of files/folders

The very nice looking Paragon Exact Image didn't really work out for me, and I'll give it another whirl after I relocate my XP SP1a CD [which is currently somewhere in the outskirts of the city, whilst I live on the edge of the centre :D ]

Acronis TI 8 had... well, only complete logical drive recovery., but an amazing compresion ratio.

extras that I would have ordinarily taken for granted
1> GOOD compression [eg. TI 8... Paragon's EI has no real compression at all]
2> GOOD speed [again like TI 8, or GoBack which ran in the background and I never knew unless I saw the HDD activity LED going furious!]
3> Support for other filesystems than NTFS [not really important, but I might need to install Linux at somepoint of time. Plus with Macintosh coming to its own Intel platforms... who knows ! ]
4> FULL and Partial backups to CD [no DVD writer]
5> Absence of many services/startups involved [eg. Paragon EI]

And finally...
is there any way, that I can *convert* my 20GB Samsung HDD into.. an *externally* mountable HDD ?
I had heard about such kits available in "lunch-box size packs"... made by some company. But then again, I think, reliability will suffer, though I have no clue.

Forgot to add...
Incremental backups is a big necessity... I like saving HD space

(Keep in mind : users usually want ALOT, but they aren't always willing to pay for it.)

or

BootItNG, a bit cheaper :)
