Ewido's ewidoctrl.exe

I like to check Taskmanager every so often to see what the heck is running on my puter.
I'm running Ewido free, and noticed ewidoctrl.exe running.
No big deal, only taking up 2K, but I see no purpose for it.
Killing it affects in no way Ewido's functionality or manual update ability.
Anybody have any ideas as to how to prevent this thing from running at startup?
MSCONFIG / Startup has no entries for it.

Figured it out.
Control Panel/Admin Tools/Services.
Changed 'ewido security suite control' startup type to 'manual', all is well.

That's odd. Whenever I put ewidoctrl.exe to manual and try to update the program, the text in the lower left hand corner states "ewidoctrl.exe not running but required!" So I just resort to manually starting by going to Start-Run-Services.msc-Select ewidoctrl.exe-Click Start. Then when I am done updating and scaning, I manually stop the program the same way.

When I installed the trial version I had two processes running, ewidoctrl.exe and ewidoguard.exe. When I removed the guard on the status screen and rebooted the ewidoguard.exe process no longer loaded but the ewidoctrl.exe process did.
I had assumed that with the guard switched off the product would be used as a standalone scanner like Ad-Aware or Spybot so what's ewidoctrl.exe purpose in life?

Thanks Panther, interesting answer. I have disabled ewidoctrl.exe so it doesn't load at system startup, the only process to load is ewidoguard.exe which is the process that I believe gives you the realtime protection to which you refer in your answer. Without ewidoctrl.exe everything still works fine ewidoguard is running and doing its job and I can still run scans from the menu on the status screen. So my question still stands, what is the purpose of the process ewidoctrl.exe?

From what I have read it has to do with the auto update feature...I turn both them off as I just want an on demand scanner to run.

Thanks Uffbros. My understanding is that auto update is part of EwidoGuard. If you switch off Ewidoguard you switch off auto update as well. So the question still stands what does the process ewidoctrl.exe do? It's interesting that no one from Ewido will answer this question or a similar thread on the same subject posted some weeks ago. Could ewidoctrl.exe be spyware???

A site search for ewidoctrl.exe brings up numerous threads and contained in those threads are comments concerning this process.

The main purpose of ewidoctrl.exe is to start/stop the guard... Therefore, if you do not need the guard or have it always running, you could disable the service (which is not really recommended)... :)

Hallo Peter , thanks for your reply. Well this just gets more intriguing. You see when I switch Guard on and off the process appears to be handled by securitysuite.exe at least thats whats running when I load Ewido and switch guard on and off from the status screen. Can you go into more detail about what part ewidoctrl.exe plays in all of this. I have it permanently disabled and its absence doesn't seem to make a blind bit of difference to anything

Turning the guard on/off and stopping (exiting it) and starting it are two completely different things :)

Switching the protection on and off can easily be done without ewidoctrl.exe... Shutting down the guard and then restarting it won't work without ewidoctrl.exe...

Ok Peter thanks, now I'm beginning to understand. What I have been doing then is switching the guard on and off which doesn't need ewidoctrl.exe it uses securitysuite.exe.
How and where then do I shut the guard down and restart it again which is the bit I will need ewidoctrl.exe for.

If you select "Shutdown Guard" from the guard context menu, the guard will exit completely. If you then start the main application it will ask you if you want to restart the guard. That's what you need ewidoctrl.exe for.

does ewidocontrl.exe always restart itself when updating, therefore one would then have to disable it each time if you did not want it running in the background?

To Peter.ewido: I still do not understand. I use Ewido-free so the guard does not work at all, but ewidoctrl.exe still starts automatically and runs all the time. Can you please clarify what it does and do I need to have it running.
