View Full Version : How long will Nod v1 be supported?

I've had problems installing Nod v2 on my Windows 98 SE machine (I posted previously about this). To tide me over while I tried to sort the problem I installed Nortons, but for all sorts of reasons I'd prefer Nod.

So my question is, does anyone know ifl Nod v1 will be supported (with definitions updates etc) for the foreseeable future? If so, then I'll go with that option in preference to Norton.

Hi Caratacus!

What kind of problems do you have installing NOD32 v2?
Do you have NAV installed, too?

Regards, Markus

The v1 will be supported for other two or three months only.
About you problems: sorry, I didn't read your previous posts. Nobody on the board did help you to solve them?

ciao,
Paolo.

Would you mind posting an URL/link ?

http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=10537

would appear to be the URL. It appears as if there is some conflict with some other program that tries to run. Assuming for the moment, that on the last attempted install that was mentioned, the problem re-manifested itslef without manually launching any programs the conflict must be with something that is set to autostart (which would help narrow it down).

If you could please download the freeware AutostartViewer from

http://www.diamondcs.com.au/downloads/asviewer.zip

and once you extract the single executable and launch it, go to the "MAIN" menu and make sure that the top three options are selected and then press "save". Then if you could copy and paste that log here that would help us in seeing what else is there that may be causing the problem.

Thanks,

Dan

Hi! Thanks for the help. I have put the asviewer.txt file below but first a couple of points.

1. I had Nortons AV & internet security installed a couple of years ago, but have been using Zone Alarm Pro & first Vet then Nod v1 for the last couple of years with no problems until the upgrade to v2.

2. I bought the current NAV and IS (2003) and installed them again after the failure to install Nod v2

3. Many of the items on the list below don't start - I have deselected them in the System Configuration Utility Start box so that only these are chaecked to start there:
DocCommander
Scanregistry
System Tray
Winsafe
Load power profile
Fineprint despatcher v4
Lexstart
Lexmark printray
Tweakui
ISDCLT
ccApp
showiconDickSmith electronics...usbprodrive
intellitype (but this has been installed since)
SSDPSRV
ccEvtmger
Nisum
ccPSYcvc
Scriptblocking
Panekiller

The Norton stuff was not there when I had the prob with Nod v2.

OK here's the file:

I should add that of course I have not had NAV or any other av installed at the same time as Nod.

The v1 will be supported for other two or three months only.

Does that include updates or just tech support? Will I no longer be able to update with the latest virus definitions or whatever you call them? I adhere to the old fashion philosophy that says "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!" And this v.1 works so smoothly on my antiquated Win98 system that I truly hate to mess with it. Thank you.

Hello Acadia,

I think they are refering to Tech support, cause the updates are the same for v1 and v2, so that means that you can still use v1 if that's desirable.

Martin

Hi Acadia,

To make sure i have posted a topic for this one, so maybe one of the Mods can give a definitive answer for this issue,

No, Martin: they are not the same ;) v2 databases are not compatible with v1. When Eset will drop support for v1, the current users of this version will be "forced" to update their v1 to v2. There is not any good motive to continue to support the old version, since v2 is technologically more advanced in many ways.

ciao,
Paolo.

Believe me, I can understand your concerns. But I think that you should give a try to the new version. We tested it even under quite old configurations and it worked like a charm.

Paolo.

Hi Caratacus,

You have a lot of applications there!

I can find nothing definitive but if you are willing to give NODv2 another try you might want to do the following

1. Uninstall your present AV

2. Delete the following regkey and reboot

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\NOD32POP3

3. If you still have a NOD folder, rename it to something else as a backup

4. Temporarily disable all tasks in TaskScheduler

5. Temporarily uncheck your currently enabled autostart items in MSConfig

6. Close out of all programs, including those in systray

7. Do the Ctrl-Alt_Del shuffle to view running processes, terminate all running processes except for explorer and systray. Once you do this hold on for 60 seconds and recheck the running processes (sometimes one or two will "come back")

8. Install NODv2

Reboot.

Assuming this works, (you will want to wait a few minutes after you login to be sure it is stable) re-enable one autostart entry at a time and reboot each time to isolate the point of failure.

If there are any errors please post as much detail as possible.

Thanks,

Dan

Hi Dan,

I believe on Symantec site, they have a special tool for uninstalling Norton, especially for those left behinds in the registry and systemfiles, maybe Acasia can give this tool a try.

Found it:

Yes, I'd recommend running that Norton uninstall tool, also. Although it may not appear that it's needed when you read about it on the Symantec site, it seems that it does help removing leftover Norton bits that may conflict with subsequent AV installs.

Hi Sig,

That's the same impression it left on me after reading it, it's a good thing thing though, providing such a tool, allthough my preference is doing it manually, an intens job, but than i know there are no leftovers left.

Martin

Ok, now I'm confused. Why would I want to run this Norton uninstall tool when the only thing I've got on my system is version 1 of Nod32?

Hi Acadia,

Sorry, we were still under the impression that NAV was still in your system, that's why the uninstall talk.

This tool is for getting rid of NORTON leftovers as well as in the registry as in files.

Good luck,
Martin

Dan's instructions to the thread starter who was using Norton did not include running the Norton uninstall tool. I was referring to that.

If you don't have Norton on your machine and never had it, don't use it.

Ok, so despite downloaded instructions to install version 2 over version 1, should I first uninstall version 1?. My main concern is retrieving my original email settings. Will uninstalling version 1 first really bring back the settings?

(And thanks for all the support and ideas, I really appreciate it.)

True, i was under the impression that Acadia was running Norton before installing Nodv2.

I apologize to Acadia for the confusion.

Martin

( i must be seeing things that aren't there after reading the forum for a couple of hours now) ::)

Hi Acadia,

Yes, Nod will bring back your default settings, but as you have never ussed Imon, than there is no concern al all.

I uninstalled Nodv1 a couple af times, and my default email settings were restored.

I however did a clean install of Nodv2, i terminated NOD in the taskbar first before uninstalling, cleaned out the registry for leftovers, rebooted, installed Nodv2 and that went fine for me.

Goodluck,
Martin

Oh, yeah, and another question. If I uninstall version 1 first, how will version 2 recognize me as a legitimate owner?

Thanks again.
