Well, I guess you can call it a "firewall" now. :)
Competetion in the firewall field has really heated up. Good news for the consumer at least.
As much as I like Outpost, I realize everyone in the world is not going to use it, so I'm glad that those people that choose to use other firewalls are getting some good protection.
I would imagine this is going to improve the popularity of BI immensly. *:o

Hi Root * ;),
Personally, I cannot say anything about this new BID version yet; as always, possible bugs or limitations can (will?) show up.
As an old OutPost diehard, you surely know all about the problems coming with (re)designing a FW * ;D

Hello Paul, I was on the Black Ice Site looking for a link to the 3.5 version. Do you by chance have the Link? I thought I would give this programme a blast on the Net, and report back. *Kind regards, Peter.

Hi swisscoms,
As it seems, BID can only be upgraded from an earlier (already installed) version - at least for the moment.
regards.

Many thanks for the info Paul. I will try a free download from CNET Tonight and see if they will update to 3.5. I guess in time they will offer a 30day trail no doubt. Warmest regards, Peter.

Digging deep in memory:
Shutting down BID does not shut down blackd.exe. This one should be closed down manually (perhaps even twice). Right clicking the traybar icon and choosing "stop B'ICE Engine" could help as well before closing BID.

Thank you Paul for the link. Also to the other memebers also. I have had a chance to test drive the App. and it certainly seems to be a vast improvement. It appears to warn and if one wishes block "Firehole", "Tooleaky", "Yalta", and GRC "Leaktest". It responds to ICMP pings though from PC Flank, and DSL Reports.com. Port scans appear "Stealthed" well. All in all, I think it will be very popular Programme. Regards everyone, Peter.

My understanding is that it checks your system and anything currently on your PC is automatically "accepted" as good. *Seems to be a security problem there....if you already have a trojan (undetected) on your PC, it's marked as "OK". *I know they have to start somewhere but this method does not give me a good feeling. *:( * The problem I see with BID, is that it needs to update it's "bad guy" list with new trojans that come out. If the trojan is not in the BID database, BID won't detect it. If you have that trojan on your PC and upgrade to 3.5, it will automatically say it's "good." What's good about other firewalls (that have outbound protection) is that you will be notified whenever something tries connecting to the internet, so that unknown trojan will make it's presence known. *That won't happen with the new version of BID (if I understand it correctly). *Still, it's good to see that BID is going in the right direction, it's just not there yet, in my opinion.

Well,my trial of it didnt last long, poor.
Very poor,an example,Winamp with Minibrowser opened, with my Sygate it alwats warns me its trying to connect,ZA used to as well,BlackIce-No.
This happened on several applications.
Maybe I have missed something as I haven't(and never)read any help files.
I'll stick with Sygate Pro I think,it sorts out the stuff you dont need to know about(unlike ZA)and does the job,and does it very well.
I think the saying is "If it aint broke, dont fix it"

I have 3.5 installed on my XP machine and all seems to be working well. *Passed all the scan test so far.
