Need both PC to see each othe rover LAN

I have an Origo ASR-8400 router which is normally shared between two PCs, my own and my wife.

I'm currently setting up a new PC and I've run the XP Network Setup Wizard on the new and the old to create a LAN so that I can transfer files form the old to the new without having to move drives around.

My wife's machine is still physically connected to the router but isn't powered up as I'm having to use her monitor on the old PC

The old PC has Sygate Personal Firewall Pro 5.5 and on the new PC I'm run a trial of Outpost Firewall Pro.

I'm using Allway Sync (a brilliant program) for the tranfer process and this works fine . However, I have to disable both firewalls in order for the PC to see each other across the LAN during this process.

I'd be most grateful if anyone could give me idiot type step-by-step instructions (I'm an old wrinkly so need all the help I can get) on how to setup both firewalls so that I can effect file transfer without disabling them.

Hi chris18

First you will need to determine the LAN subnet. You can determine this from the router's IP or that of one of your PC's. A typical default IP for home routers is 192.168.1.1 which would mean your LAN subnet is 192.168.1.0/255.255.255.0 Your router configuration pages should have this information, or you could do an ipconfig /all at the command prompt on you PC to get the required particulars.

Once you have this, check your firewall configuration options. Most will have an option for network settings or trusted zone. You would put your LAN subnet there. Check for this option first.

If there is no option like that, then you will have to create a rule to permit inbound and outbound TCP/UDP for the subnet.

I've run cmd and the ipconfig /all on the primamry (new) PC and I get the following.

If I try the same on the secondary (OLD) PC I don't get anything in the command window although it's connecting to the Net so is clearly working OK.

I'm a bit stuck at the moment as I can't find the router manual (I know it's here somewhere). Is there a utility I could run on both PCs to give me the info?
