Alternative freeware for RegDefend...

It's very interesting to have an idea bout RegDefend the it only uses the resources when something wants to access the registry... unlike other security softwares that it always monitors and consumes the system resources even if nothing was happening. :P

I use WinPatrol, Arovax Shield, and ProcessGuard Free to protect my registry for now, and have also trialed the RegDefend and its going to end its trial period. :'(

But I am just wondering if there are any good free alternative to RegDefend, that can also protects the registry without consuming the pc resources. ;)

Have you tried MJ Registry Watcher? (http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=54666) It polls, though is very low in memory usage.

I've been using RegProt http://www.diamondcs.com.au/index.php?page=regprot for over a year now. Its coverage is not comprehensive but I find it alerts on virtually all changes to the registry. Its a hooking app and uses almost no resources so it can be used as a backup to your main registry protector. It doesn't seem to be highly regarded but I wouldn't be without it.

The "free" capabilities in RegDefend after the trial are not insignificant so you might find that you can use it that way

I think that the free one doesn't allow you to block a change but it still allows you to easily (manually) Kill the process attempting to perform the change. Given this you can see that the free version isn't as convenient to use as the paid one but it is still effective from a security point of view

Wonder why it is then that the Regprot helpfile describes the app thus: "Many Registry monitors work by actively polling specific registry locations (you can confirm this with a tool such as SysInternals Registry Monitor). The current beta of Kaspersky (either KAV2006 or KIS2006) includes registry protection in its Proactive Defense module (hooking like RegDefend rather than polling). Since it is a beta it is currently free to download (see the Kaspersky Beta Forum (http://forum.kaspersky.com/index.php?showforum=16) for details) but is also likely to have issues or conflicts with some software.
