View Full Version : private vs. public forum?

With not as much looking around as I should, and -- without looking for commentary about this at the private forum, I... have a question...

"What criterium distinguishes what subject matter is appropriate for the private vs. the public forum?"

It would seem to me, that THIS forum should/would serve as a place to those "considering" purchase of TDS, as to get an idea of whether or not to make their final decision of purchase for this wonderful program.

But there are already a vast number of technical posts made here, almost giving the appearance that the private forum might one day be disposed of (don't let me start no rumors here! Pure laid back conjecture!).

When I registered TDS, I recall distinctly a blurb that the private forum should NOT even be "referred to" in other forums, I suppose to prevent crackers from attempting to get in. "For licensed operators only".

But now with THIS forum, the world watching, me participating in both, the question posed above strikes me whenever I have a TDS issue.

Some clarification on this would be appriciated. Go ahead and chastise me severely should this have been done already at the private forum.

I've not even been there (I think) since registering here.

Regards All

It is still so Carlene, the private is supposed to be kept private, so every way to get there or how to get in is not to be supposed to be posted anywhere at all.
Also what's taking place there and the many behind the screen info DCS gives us tehre is for there, and not to be copied here or elsewhere.
This forum here at Wilders is intended for new users and trialers to be helped on their way, and other users are helping them along. Once here, people might continu posting a bit on the matters, but as you'll have noticed a lot is moved to the DCS forum as well.
In the trial functions are limitations in several functions thinkable, and it is no use for instance to post large scripts here which can't be run in the evaluation versions, but in the private forum is the appropriate place to post and discuss them or place links to download them, etc.
But the little fun-scripts do work on the trial version so to get an idea it's just nice to post once in a while such a thing, but better in the private forum in general of course.
When it's settings, configurations, those parts, it's just good answering some questions here to help the people on their ways, who by lack of that info and not succeeding might lose their ways with the products.
If you look through the private forum, you see a lot which is for the licenced operators only by all means and that's the way to keep it.

Unfortunately, some licensed operators cannot afford the luxury of staying online to reach the private forums. *I am currently writing from my son's PC, and he doesn't use TDS. *When I'm at work, which is when I mostly spend time at Wilders, I am not using TDS. *I use TDS when I go to my hotel, where I have TDS-3 installed on my laptop, and it is too expensive to visit the private forums because of hotel phone charges.

Because of this, I am excluded from the private forums. *I wish it was otherwise.

Can't take your laptop with you to your work?
Or install TDS on one of the other systems too?
Your employer might like such extra security initiatives?
Maybe a wireless connection or your own phonebox to carry with you could be much more convenient? Most of all because you seem to have this problem frequently?
There are certain parts which are exclusively for the private forum, so i really hope you find a solution.

No, I can't take my laptop to work. *I would have to use their phone line, and they pay for it, not me. *I can't install TDS on a work machine since they would have to pay for it. *A wireless connection would cost $$$$ since I live in a hotel.

No, the simple answer is, I['m a licensed TDS operator - so why can't I simply log in with a userid and password?

And that's a question to ask support@diamondcs.com.au
I'm sure you won't be the only one.

The wireless things i mean is just your own box or there is even kind of portable phone which you connect to their line and your own number coded inside and several ways and prices for those. Do shop around for them, worth the trouble.

Now wait a second, I don't get it.

OR MAYBE I DO.

You do not need to have TDS on a machine to reach the private forum. I will now go to the private forum, and post the URL that will get you to the private forum login page via a simple link. You simply use it from another computer that does not run tds.

The topic will be under TDS titled "Simple link to get you here from non-TDS machines"

Remember why I am not posting it here. THAT URL IS NOT FOR PUBLIC DISPLAY.

IN FACT, no url pointing into that forum is for general public knowledge.

For me only works with TDS running and via that.
Support for sure will be able to give some additional info.
You did not take your laptop to your son, btw?

The url leads you to a login page, unless you already have an active session into the private forum, where the index will be displayed because of that existing active session.

This may too be the case if TDS is running, it MIGHT in some funky way form a valid session cookie alowing straight access into the forum. But c'mon... that's doubtable.

Try shutting down TDS, shut your browsers down, delete any related cookies, and try again. Works for me on multiple machines without having to do any cookie fiddling.

I have tds ONLY on the machine with access to the internet, the others are a test box and an old 486.

Could throw away the cookie again, maybe with their new settings it would work now.
It brought me only back to the login page all time, no matter what i did, even the URLs i got send to try. Maybe the browser is joking on some parts, who knows.
Anyway, i've nothing against it going via the TDS console; in the private forum are several threads about this point.

No, I didn't. *I live in England but work in Ireland, so carrying a laptop every weekend isn't something I like to do.

Checkout,

Apologies, yes you can reach the forums directly - TDS just provides a simple F5 press to get there which is for ease of use.

If you have any problems signing up just mail support@diamondcs.com.au for a password, include your registered name :)

Thanks, Gavin. *I have actually signed up, so no problems there. *I guess I just need the URL so I can visit while I'm at work.

Thanks.

MrBlaze,
we registered users are very happy with our private forum for even more background education and a lot more.
Several functions like among others executing large SS3 scripts are not possible in the trial version of TDS, so for all this and a lot more behind the screen info it's worth registering already.
So why sneaking in via backdoors if you can have the whole lot via the front doors, wide open?

If the TDS-3 / WG-3 are legally registered, the upgrade to 4 is no extra cost, so that is something already.
For non-usa companies a trojan or a keylogger is what it is no matter its origin.
Your wishlist is nice, indeed.
Overhere software in general is twice as expensive, even original versions from other countries, so this is why i rather buy it via internet. Only several customs officers don't know the difference between cd-roms with software, on which are no extra taxes and cd's with music, on which are extra taxes, so there's a problem, for which i often download to avoid those problems.

Jooske is it posiable to get a legal recipt when i purches my tds cause what if my puter gets wiped and my back ups are currupt well melted cause of the sun and tds computer records go dowen?

is it posiable to request a actual physical recipt in case the end of the world comes and all 3 things happend?

that way when tds data base back up i can send my proof of purches.

inquring newbys mainly me would like to know lol.

Blaze, just keep your key file somewhere else - on a floppy at a relative's place, or on a couple of websites you own. *You can always download TDS again, copy the keyfile back to its directory, and you're back in business. *You don't need a receipt that way. *:)

Jooske

Don't worry MrBlaze, you never are forgotten in the DCs database of registered operators, they know you are.
But it's good to have an extra copy of the key stored on the computer in another file, on a diskette, maybe in your banksafe, ...... but with TDs you should be protected against wiping by intruders, although even TDS can't prevent mechanical system crashes.
Maybe somebody can write a script for that in time :)
