maybe a number of the tech savvy partners around the world could add the various servers to their monitoring systems for Eset - now that a global market for the tools is strong, a global monitoring network is probably in order... we have a very simply Nagios setup, which email and pages me if any of our servers is not routable - I have HTTP, SMTP, POP3, PING, DNS and checking on the relevant servers, and will be expanding it to passive checks on remote servers for disk space and rootkit checks, as well as (probably) SYN and reflective SYN DDoS attacks... of course, those things take time, but adding a new contact, a couple of hosts for STANDARD service checks (like HTTP, PING, DNS, mail etc) are only a few minutes work...

if it's an upstream issue with a router, you have no control - OTHER than to change your DNS to point to a server in an unaffected part of the world, then to change it back when the route is up again.

The big problem with router issues, is that it's generally your upstream's upstream provider - some large telco, and they hardly ever admit they have a problem, and when they do, the fix is generally "very soon" - which can turn out to be days if a large enough router fails without a spare on-hand...

I speak from personal experienece of running a hosting company, and it's why we're actually splitting ourselves across multiple data-centers - we have a number of large clients who need that kind of resilience against upstream system failures - email is EASY to fix this way, web is a LITTLE harder.. but we're going to be offering a 2 center hosting package next year, followed by a 3 and 4 center mirroring setup for a number of those that require it... of course, there are MANY bridges to cross to get there, and it's only PLANNED at this stage - actually accomplishing it is a BIG hurdle... I do feel for the Eset tech's though - because often times these issues are COMPLETELY beyond your control...

Yes, my fastmail.fm email service has data center servers in NYC and TX.
Used to be Norway and NYC.

Sure C. Schwab, any brokerage, has similar, similar requirements.

Besides network issues, there can be power issues. 85% of Texas does not share its power grid with other states, it's called the Texas Interconnection. Other two shared grids in U.S.: Eastern and Western Interconnections.

our customers aren't the schwabs of the world those kind of large companies generally have the pockets to buy whatever they need, our target market is smaller - the 5-50 million dollar company whose IT infrastructure is crucial, but not into the realms of 5+ full time IT staff - or if they are, those that need to concentrate on their internal systems, and leave web/intranet/extranet applications & email infrastructure to someone who does JUST that.

My past I.T. lives as database admin, unix admin and database analyst programmer for banks, insurance companies, re-insurance companies and venture capitals has demonstrated what can be done when money is no object - often times that's LESS efficient (and to me impressive) than a dedicated team of pros who REALLY know what they're doing... leading edge isn't called bleeding edge because it's cheap - but solid infrastructure doesn't HAVE to cost millions in terms of investment - however, the more reliance you have on external factors (like telcos) - the more vulnerable to external problems you will remain!

Companies only need to have an outage like this one, and their main ordering system be down - and they can QUICKLY tell you how many dollars, yen, or euros they lost in terms of ACTUAL sales - however, no-one can quantify accurately the loss in credibility, the kudos or perceived status that is lost when an outage hits hard for a period of days... that's immeasurable almost... just be sure that it's SIGNIFICANT...

A disaster recovery scenario to prevent outages like this would have MULTIPLE failovers, some automatic, others manual or triggered event failovers - however, it's not that technically brilliant to implement - you need to PLAN for the worst to happen though - often it's the simple things like back-hoes and fiber being ripped from the ground, or a rat chewing through insulation that foils your attempts to make yourself bullet proof... there is a LOT to consider!

Did not think of mentioning it previously, but my email service does have an independent forum at emaildiscussions.com, not part of their website, not run by them, - guess similar to this forum for Eset-Nod32 - that the two owners and growing support staff monitor hourly and respond to all major issues in just about, again, real-time.

Besides being setup somehow to have a webpage appear stating the situation when a major issue interferes with a normal process. Most likely some redirections given the two data centers. Have not seen in 2, 3 years. Seem to have it mostly worked out. Experience a great Teacher!
