BOSTON (Reuters) - Japanese security software maker Trend Micro Inc. has teamed with PC maker Dell Inc. to sell Internet security software to consumers, a Trend Micro executive said on Friday.

Terms were not disclosed.

In February, the computer maker will designate Trend Micro's PC-cillin software as "Dell Recommended" on its Web site catalog, replacing a rival product from McAfee Inc., said Trend Micro's president of North American operations, Lane Bess.

Thanks for the warning. Just kidding. Trendmicro is o.k.

And to think just this morning on CNBC the McAfee Exec. was just bragging about all of the relationships he has with box makers and others. LOL.

TrendLabs Head Office is in Manila, Philippines! ;D

Yes, Trend Micro was founded in California in 1988 by Steve Chang, who is Taiwanese. If I remember the news reports correctly, he is quite a jovial and humorous man. ;)

BTW, Philippines was chosen as headquarter for TrendLabs because Trend belives that Philippines have very hard-working people, and the place has a good environment (or so I read in a book).

Making Viruses Disappear and Profits Appear
Who is the man behind the magic at TrendMicro? Is Steve Chang, founder of TrendMicro out to save the world, or is he seeking global domination - with their virus outbreak protection software that is saving PCs around the globe from virus infection? Truly an international business leader, Steve Chang was born in Taiwan, educated in the United States, and has established TrendMicro's headquarters in Tokyo's Shibuya-ku.ÊWith over 2,000 employees and represented in over 30 countries, TrendMicro's stock is traded on the Tokyo Stock Exchange.

Things have come a long way for Steve Chang with 2004 climaxing in TrendMicro providing real-time Anti-Virus Scanning for 187 million MSN Hotmail accounts - not a small number of potential viral infections to sneeze at! With that kind of market domination, it looks like Steve Chang may not only save the world, but he may just rule the world of Internet virus protection.

Taiwan China? Ok..... I won't get political.

Anyways, Trend's marketing department is doing a very nice job. First, Hotmail, then Dell.

I suggested to three Dell supervisors in Small Business Resolution Center recently that they start offering Kaspersky and they were actually interested. Never before has Dell shown the slightest interest in anything other than Symantec and McAfee. I think it is good they are offering PC-Cillin but even better if they will partner with Kaspersky. Wouldn't that be the ultimate? Dell and KAV?!

Y'know, I think Dell may be very interested in partnering with Microsoft after MSAV is out......But Dell+KAV is a great idea. :)

I wish the just "offered" any software, but their idea of offering, is put it on the machine whether you want it or not. Until they stop that I won't own a Dell.

I agree. I helped my sister-in-law pick out her near $3000, Dell Laptop. She wanted nothing but an OS on it. She even called Dell and reiterated what she wanted, even though she put it on the work order. She was going to University and they wanted to put the same software on all the students PC's as it makes it easier to teach them. BTW they use PC-Cillin at UWO.

The Dell came with every piece of trialware junk you can think of. So she sent back the PC. They apologised and sent another, which had all the same junk.

She sent it back again, call the credit card company to cancel (which irated Dell) and bought local. What really peeved me is that I learned that Dell only sends a restore disc now, not the reinstalation discs. What a scam.

Hope i am not straying to far of topic, but it's why I bought from Velocity Micro. They only put on what you want, and you get both Recovery Disks, and full Windows CD's. Thats what I want.

You can still get the reinstallation disks. It is right there on the web form when you configure your computer. They cost $10 now though. BUT if you buy Dell's best line, which is the XPS, you will get the disk included for FREE and you get no spyware and can tell Dell what to leave off. Dell is on the verge of introducing a radically different support system and the only users who are going to get really good support as far as home, or small business buyers, will be those who buy the XPS line.

As for the reinstallation disks, you can also call Customer Service and order them after you get your new machine if you missed seeing the box you check when configuring your Dell to get them sent with the machine. You can still get Dell Resources and Diagnostics CD, your internal modem CD, monitor CD, Soundblaster, etc. You can request all of them and I was told it is $10 for one, or all, so you might as well request them all. (The reason that the XPS comes with the disks is because Dell believes that most persons who will buy the XPS are gamers and gamers like to tinker with the system so they would want the disks...others who buy the cheaper Dells don't want the disks included is Dell's belief. Dell also believes that the gamers would be angry if spyware is put on their boxes and they would notice it right away also, whereas, the users who buy the cheaper Dells wouldn't know or care about any spyware. Cynical attitude, huh?

You can order the XPS without antivirus from Small Business. I don't know about Home. Never order a Dell from the Home Division. Always buy from Small Business.

Actually the Precision is their best line, second best is the Optiplex series. The XPS is a member of their entry level Dimension line, their "1 year home PC family". It's their top Dimension. Optiplex and Precision are their higher grade 3 year business grade models.

IMO it's good that the Tier-1 OEMs bundle an antivirus with their products. They target the average home PC user, who may or may not know any better. Granted it's often a 90 or 120 day trial which the person "forgets" to upgrade...but better than nothing. Those of us who are more PC savvy and picky about things will always format/virgin OS install anyways...and that's a very small percentage of the Tier-1s market share.

I was referring to Home and Small Business users. We are not allowed to buy Precison or Optiplexes. Most of us who post here are either home or small business in home users so naturally I would speak of those persons. I doubt most of us would even want an Optiplex or Precison. I know I wouldn't.

I don't know what you mean about one year versus three years though....if you are referring to warranties those depend on what you decide you want and also depend on if you buy from Small Business or Home. Plus what is "one year home family"? I don't know of anyone who is stupid enough to buy from Dell's home division so are you referring to stupid, ignorant users? Most people buy as small business owners from Small Business Division and that is totally different from buying from the Home Division wjhich is utter crap.

I just dont understand it....

McAfee is much better product than TrendMicro. The only thing I dont like in McAfee is that they advertise their other products and pop-up windows with special offers! Its like adware !

But im sure that Kaspersky could be much better choise!

We all remeber that TrendMicro incidnet with update few months ago when all customers who did update during that period had to reinstall Windows or seek for help because it could not boot-up..

Dell have obviously now found a much better deal, cost-wise, with Trend than any other AV vendor ;)

Simply, protective ability is not their first choice in choosing a particular AV!

I would agree, except that there motive has nothing to do with helping non savy users. It is money. Otherwise if you specifically requested that they leave that stuff off, they would. But they don't give the home user that option.
