If I wish to secure a Word document which be more protected, using the built-in Word password feature or using an encryption software such as Axcrypt? Or would they both offer about the same protection? (Word 2000 on an old Win98 system)

Thank you, Acadia.

Hi Acadia,

Recovery of protected Word Docs (using MS Word's protection) is pretty trivial. If you do a search on the net you will find a lot of programs that accomplish this. So your best bet is to use a reputable thirdparty encryption program. (Many of which have plug-ins for various MS Office tools.)

Decyphering the latest word encrypted docs is no trivial business... so by using the latest one (should you wish) the security level is well above average and your info is pretty secure.

But why not go one better and use PGP. As far as I know, it's not yet beaten, so, it's the best security no money can buy (yes, get the free one ;) ). Don't forget, however, that all measures are useless when you don't keep your passwords secure and the keys stored in a safe manner !!
