AVG checking mail?

Hi everyone,

new to the forums. I think I may have a trojan or something else on my PC which is sending out emails inadvertantly. Every now and again AVG fires up the email scanner saying it is connecting to an IP address. The address is either a numeric IP address or sometimes j24 vc graz.ac.at.
I have tried a virus scan AVG, ad-aware and spybot but nothing seems to turn up. Anyone have any ideas what is happening. By the way the email program is not active at the time (thunderbird).

I suggest you run the Kaspersky Online Scanner and Ewido Online scanner to find out if you really have a trojan sitting on your machine.

Also, if you are not, try using a software firewall to monitor outbound connections. There are loads of free ones available lik ZoneAlarm, Kerio, Sygate, Jetico, GhostSecurity et al.

I don't understand. Using Thunderbird doesn't mean that AVG isn't able to verify your emails.
I work with Thunderbird and AVG checks my emails without any compatibility problems. :)

hi tamtam, yes AVG is doing that on my machine too though to a different IP than yours. i was wondering something similar - at the moment i have the firewall reporting any attempt and just deny access - seems to happen once or twice a day. i don't have any onboard email i use webmail. so the question is why does AVG email scanner have the urge to want to connect to the net once in a while?

Maybe, you can try or switch to Avast! Antivirus the home edition is free and works great. I am using AVG-7 before but I felt insecure with it and there's no technical support for the free version so I switch to Avast. Avast is more advanced and has lots of features not found on other free anti-virus. 8)
