In reply to my query about Reg cleaners, Krusty wrote the following:
1. launch regedit
2. " registry" -> "export registry"
3. now make sure the option " ALL" is checked in this window
4. select folder where export to or create a new, ( my favorite
is on other partition)
5. click save
6. when necessary you double click the registry backup icon,
answer OK and all is back.

Well, that I assume may work for Restore from *within* Windows, but what if you have a "train wreck" and are at a DOS safe Cmd Line prompt (only) let's say, if things went bad?
In that case, one can choose a Registry backup to restore, but you get choices of a .cab file, from such and such a date *which may not be what one wants.* {Think I've read that old and new parts of Registry are simply merged, and if so, this may not give you precise
desired results}.
So, I did backup, following Krusty's instructions, and ended up with a file about 4.4MB in size, (which I) named Reg1 and it has a .reg extension - so, I have a file called Reg1.reg, and I copied it to a DIR called Reg on both HDs.
Elsewhere, Root mentions the program, WinRescue; as he states, a good use of a Reg cleaner, and I agree, is to clean up entries from software no longer installed on one's PC which is what I'm after really but as stated in my origianl query - it gives me pause,
to muck about cleaning the Agean stables of the Registry w/out being a bit more studied on the matter, and having a good backup.
BUT, back to this discussion: being somewhat of a gearhead, I'd like to *see & know* what's in those files - i.e., Reg1.reg or the .cab files offered for use in Restoring, from DOS prompt. I may feel better then
about my blind faith in a file or files, that may save the ranch if needed.
So, class, today's question is this: what files would you manually backup, say, if you did this under WIN98se? OR, is there a list somewhere that tells you what are the *really critical* files, that you should backup for emergency/Restore use?
***"Enquiring minds want to know..." <g>
Thanks as always, for advice/info. SG1 (Pat)
